Yeah, he was a kid in the beginning but boy he's sure slow growing up in comparison, and there aren't a lot of positive moments for him once things get serious, just like you said: jealousy, competition, and pettiness. Where he really lost me was when he threw a hissy fit in Deathly Hallows just as Hermione finally figured out how to destroy the Horcruxes. Sure, Ron was wearing one at the time, but they'd all been trading off so that's not much of an excuse, especially since he takes it off before ditching Hermione and Harry in the Hallows.
