The animation was deemed too "wooden", even back then. Mocap acting needed a few more years to really stop being so creepy, unless they were going to go to extremes to capture it well like Andy Serkis/Gollum in Lord of the Rings. I love the art style and the atmospheric feeling of The Polar Express, but there's no denying it looks stiff and some things are uncanny and unsettling!
