Honestly, I feel like even the most non-delusional of slash shippers occasionally have ships where they think, "I know the writers aren't going to go there, but...maybe this time they will?"

The point where it gets self-deluding, IMO, is when a person goes from "It could happen and I'd love if it did," to "I believe it will happen, and I will ignore and/or deny and/or misconstrue anything that indicates otherwise."

Agreed.

I know I've had a few LGBT ships where I've thought 'maybe they might?' but I never let myself get fully invested in the idea because the chances of it actually happening are slim to none most of the time.

And all that kind of belief can lead to is bitter disappointment, especially if you're in the middle of a fandom echo-chamber where everyone is going 'well why wouldn't they, it just makes sense!' when no, it makes sense to the shippers. And that's okay but you gotta know when to pull back and realise how it will probably end.
