Really? I thought the criteria of having to be straight in canon to be considered a slash ship had become obsolete a long time ago. I tend to forget it ever existed.

I consider any ship that's between two men a slash ship, whether they're straight, bi, or gay in canon. However, I think context is important here. The OP's question was:

Times slash ships became canon! Or even close to it, since it's such a rare occurrence.

That pretty clearly implies they're talking about the kind of slash ship where the characters aren't established as gay from the outset. The kind of slash ship where you have every reason to think it's not gonna happen...and then it does.
