There is a difference between knowing X exists and actually becoming friends with X.

Are you the anon I was talking to? If so, would you care to revise your statement from "People don't learn unless they are exposed to different things" to "People don't learn unless they become friends with different people"?

nayrt but I guess I have more appreciation for everyone who manages not to support hatred and bigotry against people they don't know personally and are on friendly terms with. Doesn't seem like that ought to be so difficult, but...

It is when you are surrounded by and raised in bigotry.

The poor dears, only bein' racist because they don't know right from wrong

See, if everyone had your attitude, progress would never be made. Thankfully, more intelligent people exist.

It sure is terrible how people go around holding bigots accountable for their beliefs, speech, and actions, isn't it.

So do you disagree that racism is morally wrong? Or do you disagree that people are smart enough that they should be able to recognize it's morally wrong?

Ehhh. I might buy that if...

* Really? NOBODY in your family/home town is a decent individual?
* You're very young and/or have remained extremely isolated and sheltered from the outside world.

But at some point people watch television, they go to school, they meet other people outside of their families, they find the internet, they gain more life experience... and that's where the "I grew up in a bigoted environment" argument becomes less and less convincing. After a point, if you're in a bigoted echo chamber, it's because you choose not to leave it or hear other viewpoints.
