Well... JKR talks a good game re: diversity and representation, which kind of fuels fans who are into that. Add that to fans' fond memories of the series and maybe a little conflation between "I love Rowling's books" and "Rowling is an amazing writer" and I can see why the expectations were higher.

And that's the thing. If she wasn't coming across as a bandwagon jumper, people really would not care that a book series written in the 1990s, before we were all conscious of diversity and such didn't do more to be inclusive. I overlooked the Dumbledore thing because it was frigging 2007 and TBH, I could see the undertones of a Grindledore relationship within that story...and I was far from some slash loving fangirl back then. A lot of the other stuff since is just weaksauce
