that article just makes it even more muddy. he has far more experience with Chinese cuisine than most white guys who taste a sichuan pepper once and decide they're experts, but also wtf tiki bar.

like, yeah there's shit to get mad at but also in places in the midwest where they didn't seen an actual Asian until about 15 years ago (I have lived in such places) the food critique is quite apt.

Oh, I don't disagree that there's some dire food out there passed off as Chinese food. But that was a really, really dumb and insensitive thing to say in his position. The fact that he's opening a chain himself (with a tiki bar, 100% WTF) and framing like he's doing the Midwest a public service makes it even cringier.

Do you live in the midwest?

Yes.

The Twin Cities just isn't one of those places though, given the large populations of Hmong and Tibetan immigrants and their descendants (just to name two groups), who have been there for longer than Zimmermen. Also, I will forever defend Leeann Chin as the best Chinese fast food place ever.

What people are most upset about with this isn't him comparing himself to other white-owned restaurants. It's him saying that he had more justification to talk about what authentic Chinese cuisine was than Philip Chiang (one of the founders of PF Chang's, and son of Cecilia Chang, one of the major figures in bringing Northern Chinese food to the US), saying "despite how he looks on the outside, he's a rich, American kid on the inside". Basically denying his race and saying, in essence, "nah, he's basically as Chinese as I am".

I live in Minneapolis. We have Chinese restaurants and markets run by people originally from China. We have huge Somali-, Hmong-, and Mexican-American populations where people are running delicious restaurants, food trucks, etc around town. I think his statement c ame across as condescending and ignorant of what is going on in the city.... where he’s opening his first ever restaurant. Like, we were doing fine, thanks dude.

Ps - the food is apparently super mediocre, so he failed on multiple levels here.

I've been in Minneapolis and had really good Chinese food there! So yeah, I don't know what he's on about.
