Re: White people of FS, how many non-white friends do you have?

I worked with and am still friends with a Black man, and we talk politics and geeky stuff all the time. My VISTA supervisor is a Black woman, and she is awesome (and she's not going to be my site supervisor anymore, NOOO!!), and we talk MAGA shite and racism a lot when we're supposed to be talking about my job, heh.

Roxymissrose has been my buddy and slash mentor since I joined LJ - Black woman in Jersey, so we only talk online. We dip into race and politics (on FB, too), but it's about 50-50 with fandom stuff.

I don't interact much with people in my community - I'm a bit of a hermit - though we have a lot of Asian (mostly Korean and Japanese), Latina/Latino (mostly Puerto Rican), and Black families here because of the military base (it's huge. we also have families from overseas, including the Middle East, that have come here). So it's *diverse*, but i just don't hook up. Most of my friends are online. The Pulaski County Democrats is headed by a Black woman who i wouldn't say is my *friend* - we don't know each other that well - but we've talked politics a lot, and I voted for her in the elections (she didn't win, bah).

I did have a Kuwaiti friend, and we talked about hijab and race and religion. Sadly, she died a few months ago.

I dunno how many of my online friends are non-white, I don't ever ask.

Can I ask, why capitalize black?

For the same reason people capitalize Asian or White or German. You capitalize African-American, so I capitalize Black. And use it rather than A-A since not all Black people are of African descent.

Huh, I've never seen anyone capitalize white before. And only Asian/German/etc because they're specific races (or groups of races in the case of Asian I guess).

Black is a specific group, too....

From where? Wouldn't it be like, African/Egyptian/Nubian/Ethiopian/etc?

Where do you mean when you say 'Asian'? It's a general group.

But it still has a root continent of Asia that covers all those within. I mean African makes more sense than Black if we're generalizing locales, tbh.

We're generalizing a characteristic. I have no idea if a person is from Africa, America, or Trinidad, at a glance - I can just see the obvious, their skin color. Same for someone who is Asian - I can't tell at a glance if they're from Taiwan or Vietnam, but 'Asian' works until I know more.

*sigh*

Not sure why this is such a big deal, honestly - have never had anyone be quite this concerned over a capital letter.

Sorry, didn't mean to make it a big deal, I have just never seen someone capitalize white OR black so it was a bit weird to see.

Well, it is kind of goofy. Makes me wonder if she talks about people who are Freckled or Blonde or Olive-Skinned the same way.
