Yuuup. You a Vancouverite too?

I've actually had more than one Chinese person say they wanted to apologize to us (white people) for all the rich Chinese people coming here, buying up properties, and driving the property values sky high.

Personally, I don't hold Chinese people accountable for what's happened with our housing market. They saw good investments and they made them. IMO the government should've been on the ball in putting legislature in place to avoid the situation we're now in, but that's on our government.

That's just my take, though, and I'm not super knowledgeable about this stuff. Truthfully, it's easier for me not to be bitter about the housing market, because even if housing were cheap here, I still wouldn't have the money or upward mobility to buy.

Nah, but familiar with the area and what's going on there with the housing situation and it's kind of THE area with tons of rich Chinese people. I can't say I blame the rich Chinese people for investing either, if I were them I'd probably also prefer to store money or assets overseas where the government can't randomly decide they own it now and too bad, lol. But I can see why the other Chinese people would feel bad about it too since there's been so much.

I agree wealth really does shelter people from the worst of the other -isms, though. A rich Chinese guy there is probably like a rich white gay man in SF. Yeah, they're going to face some discrimination but I don't think it's presumptive to say some people in those situations might not quite get how bad it is for others.

Case in point: I've kind of withdrawn a bit from my friend lately, and the reason is because he's close friends with this incredibly bigoted, racist, sexist white dude. I mean this guy is just awful (charismatic, but awful). He thinks women are sluts for having sex outside of marriage, he thinks people of color should marry within their race. Horrible shit. But my friend is just like, "It's no big deal; he's harmless; he's just confused." My friend doesn't share any of this guy's beliefs, but this guy's prejudice just rolls off his back like water off a duck.

He doesn't get that other people are vulnerable to this dudes prejudice, in a way he isn't. And I'm glad my friend doesn't have to feel vulnerable to that kind of prejudice, but I'm not really comfortable with the fact that he's so accepting of it.
