Is there anything that should never be depicted in fiction?

(Anonymous) 2019-01-06 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I've been mulling over this for a while.

Is there anything that HASN'T been depicted in fiction already?

The future accurately.

Touche, I suppose. But that's not something that should never, just, can't be ever with our current psychic/scientific limitations.

Except it kind of has? There have been tons of media that have accurately predicted stuff that would happen 10, 20, 50+ years later. I mean obviously not like every single thing that was ever going to happen in the future but I feel like it's inaccurate to say nothing has ever predicted the future.

I think anything that doesn't directly someone in the process should have the right to be made, but not everything should be distributed to the public.

I have reservations on violent or sexual content based on real people and haven't sorted out my thoughts on it yet.

My feelings on this are the same as yours, including your confusion over violence depicted based on real people.

Seconding this.

there is a huge difference between depicted and romanticised

I feel like everything is fair game, depiction-wise. gore, genocide, racism, taboo relationships, you name it. a lot of people will never experience such things directly for many reasons, but fiction is a somewhat safe way to expose them to the true depths of horror that humanity can inflict on itself. if we can't learn from history and we can't learn from fiction, we are doomed to repeat every single mistake ever made. plus, you don't know why authors write what they do all of the time. depressing and dark depictions of some things can be a catharsis, or a warning, or what have you.

but depicting it doesn't mean you have to romanticise or normalize it. if anything fiction is a great way to have your protags embody the things we should aspire to, and the villains embody evil, and let the narrative sort out which is which.

romanticise
normalize

Are you geographically confused?

(Not trying to be mean, I just thought it was funny. :P)

not sa, but if that isn't an ESL mood.

both my accent and my spelling are a severe case of "depending on the time of day and mood"

Nope.

Hmm. No, but don’t be surprised or act offended if other people are grossed out/offended/pissed off by whatever you write/draw/film. Dismissing people as narrow-minded philistines for being horrified by (the existence of, without even reading/watching) your incestuous prepubescent cannibalistic torture porn makes you look like an asshole or possibly an idiot.

And anything really horrifying involving children (like, I dunno, rape or snuff) should be animated. I personally would prefer that kind of thing not be made into movies or tv shows at all, and wouldn’t want to read/watch/look at it, but that’s me (and I hope most people but really fucked up shit still gets an audience so eh.)

Mostly I'd say no unless it is actually hurting someone in real life. Like, that anal sex with butter scene in Last Tango in Paris. The actress was not told or asked about doing the scene, there was real sexual assault happening on screen. Not cool.

Personally I'm not a fan of gore horror and just violence for the sake of violence. But that doesn't mean I don't think it should exist per say because it does have an audience, and I don't think all are watching it having real life desire to hurt people.
