I felt like there was a consistent thread of her hating the beauty standards around her and butting against them but having a lot of internalized issues that made it hard for her to unironically be proud of herself, which fed into that harsh secondhand embarrassment towards those who found it easier. It was like how she found out her aunt who didn't seem intimidated at all by the shittiness of the world still couldn't always put herself out there. So when she decides to actually treat the pageant seriously and helps others take it seriously, I thought that was enough of an implication of her growth.
