Old Man and the Sea. It's only a little over a hundred pages and it feels like it goes on seven times that.

I never read it in high school/college, so I'm reading it on my own now and GOOD LORD is it a slog. How can Hemingway use so few words and make it feel so fucking long?

Hardly anyone in my Holocaust Literature class actually finished The Last of the Just. According to the TA, it was pretty common for people to give up on it.

Anything Faulkner. I like the stories, but I swear in one book a trip to answer the door went five pages to make room for a tangent about wood grain. UUUUUUUGH. I DON'T CARE ABOUT WOOD GRAIN, FAULKNER.

The first few chapters of Moby Dick were interesting and then it was all random whale factoids and sperm squeezing that made it a slog to read through. The Jungle also bored the hell out of me.

A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man was boring and it's the only book I ever read for school that I never finished.

The most boring book that I ever finished reading was Blood the Last Vampire: Night of the Beasts. Which doesn't sound like a book that would have "boring" as a problem but wow it did. Basically there was almost no blood, almost no beasts, and mostly a tedious description of a Japanese student protest movement. (That doesn't sound boring either but it was.)

Whatever it is must be something so dull that I didn't bother to read very far in and then promptly forgot about, because nothing really springs to mind. People are bringing up Old Man and the Sea and Moby Dick, and I... remember liking both of those? I certainly didn't have trouble finishing them.

I guess the most "boring" book I've actually finished is probably The Origins of Totalitarianism by Hannah Arendt, and that wasn't boring in the sense that the subject didn't interest me. It was just incredibly dry, and technical, and had lots of complicated sentences that went on forever, so it was a lot of work to get through.

Moby Dick. Who'da thunk you could take a story about obsession, vengeance and freaking whales and make it drag that much?
