Write what you want to see, OP.

When it comes to pairings, I usually prefer one way over the other, so you can bet I'm going to write it the way I enjoy it.

"Write what you want to see, OP."

This is just crappy, glib advice and I wish people would stop giving it. You're ignoring the really obvious fact that not everyone is interested in or capable of writing the things they're interested in reading. You're also missing the (again) super obvious point that being a reader and being a writer rereading your own work are two very different experiences and the latter may be far less satisfying than the former for many reasons that should be clear if you give it more than five seconds thought.

It's nice that it worked for you, but if it were that easy, nobody would ever need to read anyone else's fanfic but their own.

DA I always thought of it as a 'If I write enough for this ship/dynamic I like some people might read and like it and then try to create their own content with the same thing'.

I understand where you're coming from--I write fics for a rare ship in a small fandom and I'm always happy whenever I see a new fic that I didn't write on AO3, but I also think people should put their money where their mouth is. Not everyone wants to write fic, sure, but they can still support the writers and fics that they like and hope the trend catches on. Commenting, reccing, leaving kudos. Even posting meta or short observations about 'Hey Fandom Top as a bottom, imagine' might get some reaction from fandom.
