Where do you get your media?

(Anonymous) 2019-01-11 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
So I am thinking of cutting my cable, because it'd give me back an extra $50 a month, but the only thing I really use it for is cooking shows (ie Hell's Kitchen, Worst Cooks, Great Food Truck Race, etc), and those seem hard to find on streaming networks, and I'd honestly rather not have to subscribe to three streaming devices to watch three shows if it's going to add up to the same cost as my cable, but at the same time I feel weird pirating TV (plus cooking shows aren't always super popular things for people to upload).

Anyone know of streams that have most or all of these shows at a reasonable price? Or should I just keep my cable.

I know hulu has Hell's Kitchen but I haven't seen any of the others. hulu has a handful of Food Network shows but not all of them by a long shot.

have you looked into alternate services like PSVue? we use Vue and while it's slowly inching up in cost it's still half of what we'd pay from any cable company. and that's with hulu and netflix too.

Keep the cable if the cable is worth it to you. I did a little digging and I think the channels you watch are all owned by Discovery and it looks like they don't offer their own streaming subscription (like movie channels, you can just buy Starz streaming if you want it without having cable, or ESPN and Lifetime, which is little bit different - they just have certain movies that they keep up for a limited time but is $4/month if you're interested in that). I've seen some of those shows on streaming platforms you're right, they don't have everything and that's frustrating. Sling might be worth looking at but what I would do is compare the packages they offer to the ones offered by your cable company and make sure you are really getting a better value for your money. Also - if your cable provider is also your internet provider make sure the costs aren't tied together. But again, that might be worth it to you in the end. Ultimately what you want to ask yourself is "Is this amount of money worth the enjoyment I'm getting?"

I'm currently subscribed to Netflix and Hulu. A pretty wide range of stuff between the two of them.

Netflix has lots of cooking shows, maybe take a look and see if that'd work for you.

I also canceled by cable to save money a few months ago, and haven't replaced it with any streaming services or anything because 1) wanted to save money and 2) wanted to spend less time watching TV. I discovered that in the time since I had first subscribed to cable, a bunch more digital TV channels popped up, so I have a lot to watch just on broadcast TV now: a crap-ton of PBS stuff (cooking, documentaries, etc.), old cop shows, every Star Trek series up through Enterprise, and more.

I also check out books and DVDs from the library, watch a lot of YouTube stuff, and read articles and fic online.
