My opinion is that my opinion doesn't matter. As long as you aren't forcing it on someone else, who cares? People can figure out their own identity for themselves. People who take offense at a person's label of their own selves as if it somehow hurts them are ridiculous.

I don't think this is a good argument, because there are clearly cases where we would say that some identity labels are illegitimate, even sincere ones. So it's not actually true that all identities are valid, in and of themselves. We need some kind of line that differentiates between nonbinary gender identities on the one hand, and Rachel Dolezal on the other.

Race is not fluid the way gender is, though. Gender is complicated and fluid and weird. There is no set framework for what it means. What race you are is based on your ancestors. What gender you are (or aren't) is based on so many different factors that it is impossible to define it. So in the case of gender, I think saying that people get to define it for themselves is absolutely the right answer.
