If it's a show nobody would have heard of if not for people loudly proclaiming how Problematic it is, I'd consider that virtue signaling. Most people, even avid anime fans, don't bother to look for light-novel-based isekai shows unless they're A) already fans of that genre, or B) virtue-signalers who want to tell everyone how horrible the show is. I mean, I'd never heard of this show before this secret, so... hmmm.

It's more that outrage clicks and wank is unfortunately a good way to build a following and even the supposedly professional sites aren't above it.

It was moderately popular pre-anime: regular threads on /a/ and a decent following on manga sites too. So not unheard of with avid fans, but easy to ignore. But now that's it got an anime, people won't stop shit stirring.

That's simply not true. If you're used to the kind of surface-level fandom, sure, but within the more devoted anime community, there was already a huge built-in audience of manga and light novel fans. Crunchyroll picked it to co-produce because they knew it would be a huge hit. These kinds of series always are. Alt-right fans just like to convince themselves that they're "owning the libs" by watching shows with a lot of fan service, rape, and slavery and whip themselves up into a frenzy over it.
