I don't remember what movie it was, but a reviewer spent a lot of time complaining that the main actress in it pronounced "Newfoundland" wrong and that it was extra stupid of her to get it wrong because her character was supposed to be from there. Except according to the reviewer's phonetic guide, she was actually pronouncing it correctly for a native (like you're saying "new found land" as three separate words) and the pronunciation "newfoundl'nd" that everyone else uses is the incorrect one.

Huh, I thought Newf'ndland was the right pronunciation.

As a Canadian (with Newfie co-workers), I've only ever heard it pronounced 'newf'n'lind'. Never New-found-land.
