I'd like to know OP's reasons too. I get disliking it but this level of hatred is perplexing.

Not OP, but Tohru can be pretty insufferable as a protagonist, for one. She's so sweet and perfect you either love her or constantly want to smack the saccharine out of her.

Yeah, this was my issue with her. I definitely fell into the latter camp, haha. Show some anger! Be messy and flawed! Something! She bored me to absolute tears.

To be fair, no one really blew my skirt up. The whole thing really just felt like the pure distillation of shoujo tropes with no real creativity to set it apart; everything it did, other series had done before, and better.

I love Fruits Basket as a kid but looking back... yeah Tohru is pretty insufferable. I don't think I've ever seen a more unrealistically nice and optimistic character. Characters are only likable when they have flaws. She was living in a tent in the woods and her mom died, she has every right to have negative emotions. Yet she acts like a saint.

Not OP, but I absolutely abhorred how it went about the central love triangle, on both sides of it. I found it horrifying how Tohru essentially had to return Cat Boy's feelings or else doom him to life as a monster, particularly in the light of how there was already a girl who loved him in the doki-doki way. Particularly in the light of how the other girl had faced and overcome her own prejudices to love him, which was a helluva more interesting story than whatever Tohru had.

It wasn't much better that Rat Boy conveniently gave up on Tohru because "oh no, I mistakenly thought I was in love with her when I in fact thought of her as like my mother". Ye gods.

Thiiis oh my god all of this.
