This secret reminded me of how much I'd love to have some delicious grapes right now.

I loved Fruits Basket and have zero interest in a remake.

Why didn't you like it?

(Anonymous) 2019-01-18 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
But why?

(Anonymous) 2019-01-18 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
Oh man, I get that. Never got into Fruits Basket nor do I hate it, but I remember being polite and forcing myself not to roll my eyes when friends told me that I need to read/watch it. I always said, "Yeah, it's just not my cup of tea." And yet, always, "Nooooo give it another try! It's so good!"

Lmao anon.

Why do you hate it? I admit it was also not my cup of tea and all the stuff I heard from it where from third party sources.

I know I started reading the manga when it was big but then I dropped it and I can't remember why. It could be that I didn't like where it was going, or external reasons like being busy or waiting for new scanlations and forgetting about it in the meanwhile. I have no clue and I'm sort of curious, but I'm not sure I want to start reading/watching it again in case I find out I stopped because I disliked it after all.

Why fruitSSSS basket? Every time i see the name of this, it trips me up. 'Fruit Baskets', sure, but plural 'fruits' is just so weird.

Otherwise...uh - that's all i got, sorry anon.

SO there's a kids' game where you divide players into categories ie "reds," "blues," or, like, "cats," rabbits," etc., and then the person who is It stands with their back to everyone else and calls out one of the categories and the people in that category have to run past It to touch base before It tags them or they're out. In Japan they call that game Fruits Basket and play it most commonly by calling the categories after kinds of fruit. The reason for the title is explained in-series, but I always assumed that the reason for it being plural like that is because whoever named it over there wasn't fully up on the weird rules for pluralizing nouns in English

Interesting! Thanks. :D

(Anonymous) 2019-01-18 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
Oh wow, we learned a variant of that in grade school that I totally forgot about until now! (It was called “Fruit Basket Upset” for us. Everyone had to switch chairs for categories instead, with one chair short, and whoever is “it” trying to sneak into a seat. It was pretty much fruits only, and you yelled “fruit basket upset” to get everyone to have to switch.)

I'd like to know OP's reasons too. I get disliking it but this level of hatred is perplexing.

(Anonymous) 2019-01-18 04:31 am (UTC)(link)
Not OP, but Tohru can be pretty insufferable as a protagonist, for one. She's so sweet and perfect you either love her or constantly want to smack the saccharine out of her.

Not OP, but I absolutely abhorred how it went about the central love triangle, on both sides of it. I found it horrifying how Tohru essentially had to return Cat Boy's feelings or else doom him to life as a monster, particularly in the light of how there was already a girl who loved him in the doki-doki way. Particularly in the light of how the other girl had faced and overcome her own prejudices to love him, which was a helluva more interesting story than whatever Tohru had.

It wasn't much better that Rat Boy conveniently gave up on Tohru because "oh no, I mistakenly thought I was in love with her when I in fact thought of her as like my mother". Ye gods.

Are you me, OP?

I don't hate it but I find it vastly overrated and the hype is making me start to hate it for that.

I remember being a huge fan of the series, but I recently reread it and didn’t like it. I’m not even sure why. I’m happy for the fans of the series and wish I could be more excited about the anime.

(Anonymous) 2019-01-18 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
I don't hate it but tbh I'm not all that excited about the remake either. I keep seeing people all excited that they're going to adapt the full manga but all I can think is that I thought the manga dropped in quality pretty quick past the point where the anime stopped (also not a fan of the 'oh by the way everyone is now in a proper required heterosexual relationship' final chapter).

(Anonymous) 2019-01-18 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
The ending really bugged me and kinda soured my opinion of the series.

(Anonymous) 2019-01-18 04:27 am (UTC)(link)
I don't like the series, but being annoyed about everyone getting together in a hetero ship in a shojo manga is like being annoyed about there being a tournament fight in a shonen manga. If you didn't want it, you shouldn't have read that manga.

I still hate it years on and was mega disappointed that it was getting a remake. Saw a teenage girl reading the omnibus version of it at the bus stop late last year and actually cringed internally. I get that I'm not really the target audience despite being a female (My favorite manga back when Fruits Basket was crazy popular in English was Initial D lol) but it's so boring and the main character is a seriously unlikable doormat who can't even stand up for her dead Mum she claims to love so much.

This is funny to me. Initial D and Fruits Basket were my two big anime joys back in the day. To this day, those two are still the only ones I've rewatched. I don't think liking one means that you won't like the other.

Your taste is too bad to use such a delicious picture.
