Why fruitSSSS basket? Every time i see the name of this, it trips me up. 'Fruit Baskets', sure, but plural 'fruits' is just so weird.

Otherwise...uh - that's all i got, sorry anon.

SO there's a kids' game where you divide players into categories ie "reds," "blues," or, like, "cats," rabbits," etc., and then the person who is It stands with their back to everyone else and calls out one of the categories and the people in that category have to run past It to touch base before It tags them or they're out. In Japan they call that game Fruits Basket and play it most commonly by calling the categories after kinds of fruit. The reason for the title is explained in-series, but I always assumed that the reason for it being plural like that is because whoever named it over there wasn't fully up on the weird rules for pluralizing nouns in English

Oh wow, we learned a variant of that in grade school that I totally forgot about until now! (It was called “Fruit Basket Upset” for us. Everyone had to switch chairs for categories instead, with one chair short, and whoever is “it” trying to sneak into a seat. It was pretty much fruits only, and you yelled “fruit basket upset” to get everyone to have to switch.)

Fruit baskets were called fruits basket before the game. That's why people should stick to giving things names in their own language.

I assume it looks pluralized in the English translation because of the way the Japanese syllabary works. If you’re using the loan word furuttsu instead of kudamono (which isn’t uncommon), it’s pronounced very similarly to fruits. So in translating it into English, they just went with fruits. But the original Japanese could have read as either singular or plural, and was most likely intended to be singular “Fruit Basket”.

That's just not what you say, though. 'I got a fruit basket for christmas' not 'i got a fruits basket'. It just doesn't scan.

Yeah, it's a translation thing. Maybe they chose it to stand out as a title? In Japanese it's "furuutsu basuketto" which sounds like "fruits basket".

It just trips me up every time i see it. Reading the Wiki page synopsis makes me want to watch it a little, though. :D
