Why is it weird? Connie knows that Steven is depressed and upset, and she's not so immature or emotionally insensitive that she can't see that Steven needs someone else to be the optimistic one for once. Besides, she's been doing all kinds of survivalist training and stuff with Pearl and on her own, if you remember the episode where she and Steven go to hunt the gem monsters in the snow. One of the first things you're supposed to do in a crisis is to stay calm and take stock of your situation and resources, which she is shown doing when she sums everything up verbally and starts going through what they have in their pockets. She's falling back on the things she has learned over the last few seasons while she was training to be part of the Crystal Gems.

Exactly. If anything, it was a testament to her growth.
