04. [SPOILERS for Steven Universe episode "Escapism"]

She's also used to controlling family members, tho. This is, in all actuality, the situation she knows just scaled up times eleven, and Steven needs her to be the pillar right now.

Like, adding onto this, that entire thing was literally the Gem royalty equivalent of, "You're grounded and you're going to sit in your room and think about what you've done" that Connie's probably gone through a lot because her mother can be controlling to an insane degree.

(Anonymous) 2019-01-19 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
Do we know that it was? Being thrown in jail might be the equivalent of getting sent to your room, but they don't know what the Gems were planning to do with them after that. They could be planning to keep them there forever, torture them, or kill them. Or kill Connie, at least, since she's not a Diamond in a human body and has no value to them.

I mean yeah? That's the impression I got, given everything around it. The impression seemed to be that Pink had been sent there before, because it meant she'd have to reflect on things and not just dally in her room.

adding onto the other comment she's also been a huge fan of a book series with lots of elements like this so her adapting to it well doesn't make her sue-ish. She's had moments where she's clearly defined her own limits & boundaries and has flaws.

(Anonymous) 2019-01-19 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
See: the entire episode around how Pearl was turning her into a Good Soldier willing to sacrifice her own life, and willing to pretty much throw herself onto a sword and live only to fight for Steven.

(Anonymous) 2019-01-19 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
But that episode was ages ago, when she was still a good character. She used to have flaws, but she doesn't anymore. And being a fan of a book series where those things happen has nothing to do with how you's react to it in real life. If it did, pretty much everyone in the world would be an expert at handling terrifying situations.

Except you're ignoring that she's used to controlling parents and Steven needs someone to lean on right now. Both points brought up, that you conveniently skipped over so you could keep your shit opinion.

Honestly it felt natural to me that she was calm and collected in this situation, because that's the sort of thing that happens to me. In normal situations I'm an anxious wreck, but when we're in an unusual situation and OTHER people who are usually my rock start to panic? Something flips in me and I become the rock. When I was traveling alone I had a panic attack when a flight was delayed, but when traveling with my usually-chill dad and the same thing happened I was THE chillest I've ever been. So yeah, Connie being in that "it's gonna be okay" mode felt right to me.

+1

Seriously, OP, you're taking this as, "I DON'T REACT THIS WAY SO CLEARLY SHE SHOULDN'T BE EITHER"

(Anonymous) 2019-01-19 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
No, I'm taking it as I AND NOBODY ELSE I KNOW reacts this way, so clearly this is unrealistic behavior.

(Anonymous) 2019-01-19 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
So you want to make the post-space melodrama about their relationship pointless by proving Steven right? That'd be even worse writing, even accepting the 'bad character' nonsense.

(Anonymous) 2019-01-19 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
Congrats, you know two people who do that now! It's entirely realistic, you just haven't experienced it.

(Anonymous) 2019-01-19 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
I'm the same way. I overthink things and make myself into a nervous mess under ordinary circumstances, but when push comes to shove and shit hits the fan, I become intensely calm and grounded and logical. Who knows why it happens, but it does.

(Anonymous) 2019-01-20 02:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Me too. It's like my connection to my emotions goes very narrow and I focus. I think it is empathic and also more common than most people think. They just haven't seen a person in the right situation to trigger it.

I think you maybe don’t appreciate the context of it ultimately being a children’s show. Not to say that it can’t be mature and dark and deal with adult themes, but at the end of the day SU’s an airy shojo space adventure where a chubby little boy fights candy-colored monsters; having both preteen characters have Heroic BSOD is a bit much to expect. The writers need to maintain some notes of optimism and hope in a way that’s relatable to the target audience.

(Anonymous) 2019-01-19 07:06 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not expecting her to have trauma, I just think it would be refreshing if she could at least be, like, a little more scared and less happy.

(Anonymous) 2019-01-19 12:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I think you're being a shithead, anon.

(Anonymous) 2019-01-19 07:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Why is it weird? Connie knows that Steven is depressed and upset, and she's not so immature or emotionally insensitive that she can't see that Steven needs someone else to be the optimistic one for once. Besides, she's been doing all kinds of survivalist training and stuff with Pearl and on her own, if you remember the episode where she and Steven go to hunt the gem monsters in the snow. One of the first things you're supposed to do in a crisis is to stay calm and take stock of your situation and resources, which she is shown doing when she sums everything up verbally and starts going through what they have in their pockets. She's falling back on the things she has learned over the last few seasons while she was training to be part of the Crystal Gems.

Exactly. If anything, it was a testament to her growth.
