*sees the word "Kylo", promptly goes off to make popcorn*

(Anonymous) 2019-01-21 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Same!

(Anonymous) 2019-01-21 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm gonna pour a drink and take a sip every time someone says the word "whiny."

....nah, better not, gotta work tomorrow.

(Anonymous) 2019-01-21 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Setting aside anything else, it's just bizarre to me that people apparently by implication think Anakin wasn't whiny?

They did a much better job of motivating Anakin, actually. Kylo hasn't even had a single line in any of the movies about hating sand.

(Anonymous) 2019-01-22 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
Tbf, Smoke seemed like a shirty mentor. Sending a fully-clothed person to a desert planet at night is not going to make someone understand how awful sand is.

But we didn't see his downward spiral? We saw a little of the very beginning of it, and then a whole lot of the very bottom.

(Anonymous) 2019-01-21 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
It's true that we didn't see it on-screen, but that doesn't mean it's not there.

(Anonymous) 2019-01-21 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
nayrt

While this is true, it's also sometimes a symptom of rather poor film-making when they expect you to feel the emotional weight of scenes that they didn't bother to show you.

If you saw all 5 seasons of The Clone Wars you did.

And I say that in a "You shouldn't have to watch anticillary material, even though it is canon, to see how the main bad guy is established" kind of way.

(Anonymous) 2019-01-21 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I assumed they meant that we didn't see Kylo's downward spiral - by the time we meet him in TFA, he's already Super Evil, whereas Anakin gets basically 2 and a half whole movies worth of spiraling

Anakin's downslide in the movies - terribly rushed. The Clone Wars did such a good job of fleshing him out.

To be honest, Kylo's just an easier type of bad guy to portray. He's got no future to live up to and no magical destiny. He's a whiny emo douche with no impulse control, violent tendencies and an overblown sense of his own importance. Pull any incel off reddit, give him telekinesis and an army to command, and you've got Kylo Ren.

He does have a past to live up to, though.

This is a bit over-simplified, but it's also, in a nutshell, what makes me think he's a really good villain, and one that could hardly be more relevant for our times.

Both worked for me, honestly.

Me too.

I thought Hayden Christensen was fantastic and don't really get the criticism of his acting? I mean, it's Star Wars so it's all kind of melodramatic, and the dialogue is total shit, but I thought he pulled it off well enough.

(Anonymous) 2019-01-22 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. Natalie Portman gets the same criticism. Watch other movies they're in and their acting is just fine. It is in SW, too, they just have that cheesy SW dialogue (ugh) to overcome.

I loved the RotS novelization because it did a better job of showing how tormented Anakin was in those final days before he turned. But then, a book SHOULD be able to do that easier than a film, which has time constraints.

Mini-secret: I think you picked some really attractive shots of those guys. Thanks, OP :)

I've been enjoying them as well.

God I love Kylo secrets!

(Anonymous) 2019-01-22 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
I've seen Hayden Christiansen in other works and I think he's a good actor if given the right people to work with.
