Wait, what exactly is GOT going for in terms of 'empowering women'?

(Anonymous) 2019-01-23 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I was thinking the same thing. Like... is it one of their goals? I... can't say that I've noticed.

(Anonymous) 2019-01-23 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Hell, if I know. I guess because some of the people vying for the throne are women?

(Anonymous) 2019-01-23 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that part made me go huh, whaa too.

For most of the show, not much, but the last season was all about women coming to power. Dany finally came to Westeros and started wrecking shit with her dragons, Cersei became queen, Sansa and Arya finally made it back home and are helping Jon rule, Sansa had Ramsay killed. I also thought it was interesting that this was the season (I think?) when the Greyworm x Missandei sex scene happened, as he's been castrated and the moment was focused on him going down on her - stark difference from every other sex scene in the show.

How does him being a bastard make it better? His is still fucking his aunt.

(Anonymous) 2019-01-23 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
True, but if he's not a bastard, he suddenly outranks her in the line to the throne, which he never cared about and she's been working for years for, which feels...shitty. And, obviously, still incesty.

(Anonymous) 2019-01-23 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Why does it feel shitty? If he doesn't want the throne he can just...not take it. It isn't like they are going to put a gun to his head and tell him he has to lead.

nayrt

Ehhh...if we're treating the issue of succession like it's real life, then it's not that easy. Someone who is the legitimate heir to the throne can't easily refuse it, and if they do, their continued existence can be a real problem for whoever does inherit.

Historically, heirs can indeed become forced pawns wielded by someone else who wants to use them to lend legitimacy to their political ambitions. It happened in the GOT universe already, multiple times.

(Anonymous) 2019-01-24 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
That is if anyone knows. There are only two people in the world that know and they know because some weirdo saw it in a vision. Not exactly credible.

That's true. It's also a case where a marriage between Dany and Jon would solve the problem, incest or not....

I mean, the British Royal fam has done a lot of 'ykw...hard pass on that mate' in the past. I mean, the Queen is only the Queen cause her uncle decided he preferred being in love to being a stuffy goat in a golden carriage. It is not as complex as you make it out to be.

(Anonymous) 2019-01-24 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
But he would still have a stronger claim than her. He bumps her out of her own inheritance by his very existence, and line of succession is kind of a big deal for Westeros.

Given that the family she's from (and he discovers he's from) is known for pairing siblings as a matter of course, the incest is pretty much a non-issue, no matter how much squick the fandom feels.

In-setting, it's fine.

Legitimising him, however, is ridiculous. It's the second stupidest decision the TV show made, right after killing off one of the fucking dragons.

(Anonymous) 2019-01-24 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
The incest of the Targaryens (and Lannisters) isn't a non-issue though. "When a Targaryen is born, the gods flip a coin" was a phrase used to describe the frequency of batshit insane members of that family, and it's implied that incest is the cause of madness for Dany's father and brother as well as for Joffrey. Not to mention none of the other families of Westeros seem that down with it past it being a predilection of the family they overthrew.

I hope Dany dies but she prob won't. :( I don't care who gets the throne as long as it isn't her.

(Anonymous) 2019-01-23 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
i hope she gets it so you can stay mad about it for the rest of your life :)

(Anonymous) 2019-01-24 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
I mean...I will not think about the show about...one day after it airs, but okay.

(Anonymous) 2019-01-24 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
Me too. The worst part of last season was Tyrion going "so, what's your break-the-wheel plan?" and Dany having no ideas beyond sitting on the throne.

To be honest--

it wouldn't of made a differrence to the pairing if Jon Snow was legitimized or not, the blood of dragons run in his blood no matter what side of the blanket he is born-- he would of STILL been Dany's nephew in any case.

(Anonymous) 2019-01-24 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
I am in favor of the show legitimizing him and I hope they find out about it, because Dany and Jon are such a boring couple -- yes, a boring incest couple, I'm surprised too -- that I'm hoping this revelation will create tension in their relationship that the showrunners might be forced to deal with in an interesting way (but they probably won't).

(Anonymous) 2019-01-24 03:24 am (UTC)(link)
tbf incest in and of itself is not compelling or exciting and definitely not a substitute for chemistry

(Anonymous) 2019-01-24 05:28 am (UTC)(link)
I don't care about the "Jon is legitimate" thing. I just think making Jon and Dany canon is too cliche and I thought the show was supposed to subvert expectatuons in the fantasy epic genre. Maybe that's why I haven't cared much in the recent seasons? It's becoming a little too cliche.
