Movies/shows with gay couples

(Anonymous) 2019-01-27 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I just finished Insatiable and the Bob/Bob storyline made me crave some more media with gay couples. Does anyone have any recs? Bonus points if it's on Netflix or available for free on Amazon Prime.

For reference, stuff I've seen and loved:
Insatiable (duh)
Brooklyn 99
Alex Strangelove
Sens8
Seven Days live action movies

I've also seen 4th man out and Eastsiders on Netflix. I tried Shadowhunters but couldn't make it past the first episode :/

You have to watch Shadowhunters drunk. Then it is great.

Is there a Shadowhunters drinking game out there? That might be worth a try, lol. Though I'm not sure if there is any amount of alcohol that could save that pilot. What were the showrunners thinking? It's just amazingly bad.

Here are the best two.

https://yawednesdays.com/2016/01/05/shadowhunters-calls-for-a-drinking-game/

I think the first one is better.

The first one sounds hilarious. It seems like it would be best suited for when the Alec/Magnus UST is highest or they're already a couple, though. Whereabouts in the show would that drinking game be the most fun? (As I now know from having slogged through the pilot, they weren't a thing from the get-go. They don't even seem to know each other?)

I think they meet in like the second episode.

Woooord. It's like shitty 90's pilot level of bad.

If you can take the blood/violence, I'd say Spartacus (main gay couple happens from season 2 onwards).

Maybe also Black Sails? Though while it does include a major character and is very important to the plot, it's not on screen for most fo the series.

The gay storyline was the best (maybe only good) thing about Eyewitness (Though, one of the actors was noticably weaker than the other).

Movies:

Fair Haven
Latter Days
Jongens
Les Chansons d'Amour
Seashore

(Note: I don't do sad endings, so you're good in that regard)

Thanks so much!

I've tried Spartacus and actually can't do it because of the blood and nudity, but I've seen some scenes on youtube back in the show's heyday. Maybe I can find a compilation of all their scenes.

I feel as though I've seen Latter Days but I can't recall anything about it anymore. I'll check it out with the rest. Thanks for the recs!

Insatiable was a hot mess (IMO) - emphasis on mess. But I did kind of love the Bob/Bob story line. The moment in the bathrooms was surprisingly perfect to me. I am heartened to see that someone else on FS liked Bob/Bob.

Season 1 of Sex Education has some M/M in the last episode. There's not a lot, but what there is was surprisingly hot and also unexpectedly sweet. That said, it's really only in the last episode of S1, so it's not a very strong rec. It is a good show, though, and Eric Effiong is, IMO, a really great (gay) character, and he's one of the mains.

I actually ended up liking Insatiable, though I gave up somewhere around episode three or four the first time I tried it. Everyone is just such an asshole that I couldn't take it anymore. Picked it up again somewhere in the middle and I think it kinda picked up? I mean, both the show and the characters (especially Patty) acknowledge that Patty is a fucking awful person and I like that neither the fact that she's now pretty on the outside or even that she realised what an awful person she is made her instantly better. She's still messed up and still messes up (spectacularly). But I still feel like there's been a lot of character development, even if Patty and Bob A. are probably the characters that changed the least.

The Bob/Bob storyline is pretty amazing, as far as I'm concerned. That scene in the bathroom was great. I also just really liked Bob B. in the last few episodes. Throwing Magnolia under the bus for cheating was such an asshole move but the way he just broke down in the rehab center and then tried to make things right really got to me. I'm really looking forward to season 2, honestly, and where they are going with Bob B. and the Bob/Bob/Coralee situation.

Netflix keeps recommending Sex Education, so I might just give it a go. Is there a lot of second-hand embarrassment? That's a huge squick of mine and it seems like there could be a lot of that in the show.

Oh fuck, yes, there is a lot. Probably don't watch it.

I mean, for me personally, I didn't mind the second hand embarrassment, because it's so pervasive and all-consuming - especially for Otis (the main character) - that he's basically living in a constant state of simultaneous mortification and does-not-give-a-fuck. Like, he's maxed out his capacity for mortification before the show even starts, so when something mortifying happens, he kind of melts down for a second and then just moves on like nothing's different. Which I find kind of refreshing and cathartic.

But.

My tolerance for mortification is...medium? I cannot in good conscience recommend this show to you if you have a low tolerance for mortification; it might kill you.

Marvel Runaways has Nico/Karolina who are adorable, I'm not sure if it's on either of the streaming platforms though.

Riverdale has Cheryl/Toni who I love, but I also youtube their scenes because I hate pretty much every other character and cba watching the show outside of them, lmao.

Wynonna Earp as Nicole/Waverly who are also super-cute, the show is weird but also really, really fun.

Black Lightning have Anissa/Grace, though they don't get a lot of screen-time so if you don't like superheros or the other characters it might not be worth your time. I really enjoy the rest of the show though so I'm good with it.

Schitt's Creek has David/Patrick.

How to Get Away with Murder has Connor/Oliver.

And for SH while I can roll with the stupid there's youtube compilations of their scenes if you're interested but cba with the rest of it. (If you want to give the show a proper go they meet in 104 but if not no worries).

Oh and for movies:

Moonlight.

Love Simon.

Carol.

If you don't have an infidelity squick*, Grace and Frankie is pretty fun. The main gay couple are secondary characters, but they have their own pretty robust story arcs.

*The show kicks off with the husbands of the two title characters divorcing them after having been in a relationship with one another for years. Everyone involved is treated pretty sympathetically, and still cares about one another, though there's some pretty rocky interpersonal footing for a while.

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend features an unexpected but totally awesome gay couple. They also end up having the most mature and stable relationship of any of the other characters in the show.
