Unpopular opinion...

but it's only being thought of as a good movie because everyone was black. Had they made the exact same movie with white actors, it would've been a forgetable entry into the MCU.

That said, they need to make more movies with black/latino/gay/etc folks who are written as actual characters, not just caricatures.

Uh, they couldn't make the exact same movie with white actors. The characters being black was essential to the story.

DA- exactly. The above argument is nonsense, and reminds me far too much of the same dumb complaints made about Brokeback Mountain & gay people.

There are so many elements and concepts combined in BP that, I think, are easily overlooked and elevate it beyond a typical comic book movie. It definitely has flaws, but I can't be angry about it getting award consideration.

Even if you don't care about the fact that the characters were black, it was still one of the most effective executions of the Marvel formula

Nayrt but while I think that's true, "Marvel" formula is so cringe that the bar isn't high. It's so formulaic the quippy scripts could be written by a computer at this point.

I sort of agree, but it's still a massive accomplishment to make such an effective movie, and the black themes make it much less spiritually blank than a bunch of the other Marvel movies.

But still not an Oscar winning movie, I think is the point.

They need to make more movies with minority leads but that's not the same as giving one 'best in show' just because it's an okay film and all the actors are black and you need to score points.

It's actually completely within the Oscars' wheelhouse to give a nomination to a movie like Black Panther
