The idea of a "prestige pic", and the idea that only a 'prestige pic' deserves to win movies, is ridiculous and silly, though. Because being a "prestige pic" doesn't have anything to do with quality - it only refers to whether a movie has "prestige", which means whether it looks and feels High Class and Serious. And we shouldn't give awards based on that.

Black Panther was, I thought, a well-executed and good action blockbuster. I don't necessarily think it deserves Best Picture for that, but it's certainly more deserving of a nomination than something like that looks and feels more prestigious but isn't actually good.

It wasn't a prestige picture, but it was a pop cultural phenomenon. I think it's equally ridiculous to assume people latched unto it just because lol black people. If that was the case something like Moonlight, an actual prestige pic, would have taken the world and fandom by storm.

All of them...? Roma,and the Favourite included? O_o? Those two are seriously excellent films. They might not be the right genre or tone for all viewers, but they are pretty masterful at what they do.

And I wasn't as enamoured with Blackklansman as many other people (it was a bit too much on the nose for me, I like my films more subtle), but it is a well-done picture. Even A Star is Born is good for what it is. It's nothing ground-breaking, but Oscars do not go for ground-breaking all that often anyway.

Not gonna lie, part of me is super salty that Black Panther got several Oscar nominations while Crazy Rich Asians didn't get any. Still rooting for Black Panther to win at least one Oscar though.

I'm not sure if it should win but I've been enjoying how much it being nominated has pissed off people who think Infinity War is the most amazing film to ever grace creation (and should've been nominated instead) when it's not even the best MCU film.

Wait, people actually think that? It was good. I enjoyed it. But it wasn't even the best MCU fic. Personal opinion and all, but it is hardly the type of movie that gets nominated for an Oscar. Black Panther is, barely, like Dark Knight was, barely. Infinity Wars, though? Not an Oscar type movie at all.

I think it's cool that it was nominated. Enough entertaining blockbusters have been nominated over the years that it would feel...deliberately anti-social-justice to be opposed to this particular nomination.

That said, there's no way it deserves to win.

I haven't seen Roma so I can't judge whether that's better, but the only movie I liked more than Black Panther from last year was Sorry To Bother You, which would never win an Oscar.

I thought it was a good movie and wasn't actually all that surprised it got nominated. But, while I don't think all the movies that got nominated for best picture should have, I would say at least three others belong there and there's two I don't really have a solid opinion on.

I almost agree OP, and I've watched all the noms this year :( Roma should be the clear winner in my eyes, I didn't like the Favorite as much as I thought I would - weirdly enough, I've been stoked about it since the announcement; I love Yorgos Lanthimos' other movies, and I was very pleasantly surprised about the lesbians. Was really meh on Green Book, Vice & the music ones, so BlackKlansman and Black Panther are in this special category of "at least I had a very good time watching these" where I didn't think anyone but Roma was winner-worthy, but those two were at least a good time.

but it's only being thought of as a good movie because everyone was black. Had they made the exact same movie with white actors, it would've been a forgetable entry into the MCU.

That said, they need to make more movies with black/latino/gay/etc folks who are written as actual characters, not just caricatures.

I'm just going to assume you haven't seen all of the nominees or watch nothing but blockbusters, because otherwise the statement is just silly (no disrespect to the Black Panter, but there are /some/ other good films in the mix).

On the other hand, "deserves an Oscar" is not really that much of a high bar - have you seen some of the films that received the best picture award in the past...? ;)
