I feel EXACTLY the same way.

Yeah, I hate that bullshit. They did it in the Mentalist as well.

Wait, when? Isn't the fact that psychics are fake the main point of that show?

(Anonymous) 2019-01-30 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
With Kristina Frye, I guess they mean - she claimed to be a psychic. The MC kept claiming she was fake and assuming she'd been using various tricks he'd learned as a kid in the same racket, but he could never catch her out.

And then she got fridged.

Ugh, don't remind me. I thought that relationship was really fascinating. Not cause of her ~abilities or anything. My headcanon was always that she genuinly believed she was psychic, though. I'd have liked to see that explored. I was so mad whent hey fridged her. (But then, I also found Jane/Lisbon super boring)

I don't think the issue was so much that Rossi didn't believe in the psychic and his "abilities". Hotch stated at one point in the episode that he agreed with Rossi's view of those people, and JJ seemed to move past any curiosity she'd had about the concept by the end of the episode, too.

I think the big issue was more the way in which Rossi voiced his concerns-a "time and place" situation, more than anything. Rossi was absolutely right to want to warn the mother about the guy's sketchy history, but the way he went about doing so may have come off kind of off-putting to some, even though that clearly wasn't his intention.

All of that being said, I fully agree with your sentiment about shows giving any sort of credence to such things in general. The fact that the discovery of the girl just happened to match up, if only vaguely, with some of the psychic's predictions regarding her whereabouts should've been chalked up to mere coincidence. Instead, the episode seemed to lend a bit of credence to the guy's supposed abilities.

I felt like Rossi's reaction came from his past experiences - it's not just about his skepticism, it's because he knows that charlatans can waste valuable resources and derail investigations. He also knows that fake mediums prey upon vulnerable families in their time of grief and they can end up bankrupt as well as heartbroken. To me, that more than excuses any brusqueness in his manner, especially when NOBODY ELSE was trying to dissuade the mother from putting her faith in a psychic.

Psychics conned my grandparents out of almost all of their fortune. First a psychic would tell them they were going to get more money soon, then an offshore “contest” organizer would send them spam inviting them to put money into a “contest,” with little gray text telling them they couldn’t actually win anything. By the end of my grandmother’s life, the only thing she did all day was sit in her room and write checks.

(The bank conned them out of the rest, but that’s another rant.)

IA. It's very frustrating, because I think psychics are cool and interesting and fun as fictional things, but to suggest that it's real seems like pandering to wooly-headedness.

If a story sets up a world that's somewhat divorced from our real world, in which some types of magic are real, then psychics can be a lot of fun. But if a story is based in the real world, and then it acts like psychics might be real, I definitely get annoyed.

Numb3rs, I'm looking at you. Charlie was right.

(Although at least the psychic got killed when they brought him back for a second episode. I rewatch that episode but I can't rewatch his first one)

I always remember the second episode as having Charlie make a comment along the lines of "lol he didn't see that coming" when Papa Luthor dies and every time I see it I'm like, oh, that never happened, I just made it up in my own head!

*g* Papa Luthor in granola pants.

I thought his death was pretty sad though; it really revealed how deluded he was.

It unsettled me how ragdoll limp he is when he gets killed. I mean, obviously from this comment i have watched numbers many times and seen characters die, but that bit squicks me in some way I can't quite put into words.

yeah, unsettling is the word for sure.

It's one of the things I dislike about the Phrynne Fisher books, the implication that spirits etc are real. Although given that K.G. lives with a registered wizard, maybe I shouldn't be so surprised.

Have you watched the voodoo episode yet?

(Anonymous) 2019-01-31 04:48 am (UTC)(link)
I don't watch CM (too much of a triggerfest for me) but I've felt the same way about other shows that are set in what is supposed to be actual reality (as opposed to shows where the fantasy/paranormal elements are part of the premise) that have psychic stuff that turns out to be/is strongly hinted to be real.
