A cute animal companion can make or break a story. If they are shitty, ugly, and obnoxious, I will abandon that shit so quick. If they are adorable, I will watch it no matter how awful the plot is. Why, yes, I am an adult.

I'm sort of the same way, except I don't think there are very many animals that are shitty, ugly, or obnoxious. if there is an animal companion there, I'm usually happy regardless. Animals are cute no matter what.
