Our government likes to bitch about how it's everyone's fault for wanting to live in the cities and that's why everything is so burdened blah blah. If they spent half as much time on thinking about why that is and addressing those problems most of us would want to stay in regional areas.

I can't live where I'd like to because there's no hospital now and it's difficult to get anything delivered which is a problem when you need certain things to live.

My friends didn't want to live in the city because it's expensive as hell, but that's where the only jobs were after graduation.

If you stopped closing everything and centralising your own fucking departments, there would be jobs and hospitals and post offices and people could actually live there.

But no. You did the other thing. Now you have to live with the consequences don't you.

The internet should have made it much easier for people to live and work in these areas but my country is run by dinosaurs.

YES, especially to the hospitals. That is one MAJOR perk to universal healthcare that rural voters SHOULD be for. Clinics and hospitals would stop shutting down or reducing services because profit wouldn't be a motive.

Not necessarily. Ours are state funded. If they decide it's too expensive to run and not enough voters live in the area to make a difference to their political future, bye bye hospital.

Yikes! I don't know why I'm surprised, when, really, there shouldn't be any level of neglect from the government that surprises me.

I live in a small town in a rural area. It's beautiful, but there aren't many jobs. More people would definitely choose to live here if they could earn enough money to live on.

Rural living is awful for the environment, though. We should be actively discouraging it just because of that.

can you elaborate on this

way, way more emissions, for one thing. it takes a shitton more gas to truck stuff like food, goods, mail, etc. around when everything is all spread out. also, everyone needs to drive to go anywhere and there typically isn't any sort of public transportation system to offset all of the driving that needs to be done.

I feel like, at least in the US, those are much bigger issues vis-a-vis suburbs than rural areas

at least where i live, there's public transportation in the suburbs. it doesn't go everywhere but it's still a lot better to drive a short distance to a bus or train station and then use public transportation for the rest of the trip than it is to drive for an hour or so into the city.

I don't know if that's true for the country as a whole but I haven't done the research to say for sure

NAYRT—As someone who lives in a suburb, takes public transit, and doesn’t own a car, no one in the suburbs drives to a bus or train station and takes public transit to their destination except to football/baseball games, concerts, and for Earth Day.

The rest of the time it’s poor* people, disabled people, elderly people, homeless people, and, depending on the route, students. Every single family home on my block has at least two cars parked out front or in their garages. I’m the only exception, with neither garage nor car—practically sacrilege!

*I think a lot of really poor people people can’t afford to take buses/trolleys here that often though—senior/disabled/medicaid one way fare is $1.10, everyone else is $2.25-2.50, a day pass is $7.00 unless you already have a fare card in which case it’s $5.00, there’s no transfers aside from day passes, and monthly passes are $72-$100.

they absolutely do where i live. in fact, there's been an ongoing problem because a lot of the train stations don't have enough parking to accommodate all of the people who want to be able to drive there and park and take the train in to the city.

Distance doesn't necessarily mean an absolute answer of more emissions. Few delivery trucks driving long distance are still going to be less emissions than many driving shorter distances. Where do you think the food in the city comes from? I know where most of my produce comes from. Can most city people say the same? How far has that travelled to get to the city? Are those emissions being counted? Or all the imports for the city that go through the major ports?

Country people tend to be pretty smart about how they get things done. Pay your mail guy to bring milk and bread, save a weekly trip for perishables. Trade produce with neighbours and buy roadside from people close by.
