Yeah, that seems fair to me. Like, I'm pretty sure if you stand in front of a big street-facing window and start taking your clothes off, you can actually get charged with indecent exposure, so... it's not as though there's some magical social contract not to notice when people are fucking in the front room?

But stalking is still terrible and none of this mitigates the villain's actions. Duh.

Honestly it always bugs me when ppl in houses/apartments have their curtains open at night when the lights are on in general, like people outside can see in for gods sake, close them!

As to the secret I wonder how many people irl actually do this? Because part of me thinks this is just a TV thing where they want to be able to have someone perving in on the sex in some way for the Drama.

Nah, some people really don't even think about it. Seriously, it's weird. I mean, I'm sure there are some who do it on purpose, but a lot of people just don't think outside their little sphere. And if their sphere is inside, they aren't thinking about people outside unless their attention is called.

Huh. Guess I'm just overly-conscious of my space because as soon as it's dark those curtains are closed. Then again I am pretty private so that's why I care a lot about it.

I live out in the middle of the country and after it gets dark I NEED to have my window covered or I'm gonna be paranoid that I'll wake up and see someone looking in and watching me

Hell, the first month we moved in I had my bedroom window taped up with a garbage bag because our curtains hadn't arrived yet

I can see straight into my neighbor's dining room and kitchen because they don't close the curtains (if I look through my own mini-blinds that is. as soon as it's dark outside, my windows are closed!)

I'm in a little clump of flats, so while it's more private than being in a standard house on a road, I can still see into the flats across from me and vice-versa, so those curtains are getting shut when it's night.

I think there are people who WANT to be seen in that circumstance, but I also think there are many people who assume they won't be or aren't thinking about it. It's that "Yes, actually, we all CAN see you crying in your car" situation where people feel like they are in a bubble (sometimes even when there is no physical barrier around them whatsoever) and no one can see in their windows (or will always actively avoid doing so), sound can't possibly travel through a wall or over a hedge or whatever, no one would ever glance into their yard, car, restaurant booth, etc. when walking by, and if they aren't actually looking at anyone then no one can see or hear them.

It's like that time in grad school when I went to study at one of the big rooms in the library with lots of tables. Two tables over, someone's phone rang and they answered it and had a brief conversation because apparently when you are sitting alone at a table it's like you are alone on a deserted island and the sound of your voice couldn't possibly carry across a big, echo-y room, let alone to the next table 10 ft over.

That makes sense tbh, not how I operate most of the time, but I can absolutely get people thinking that their own bubble is more private than it actually is.

I know I've been caught like that before, went and hid in a bathroom to cry while completely forgetting that anyone outside the cubicle could in-fact hear me. But then I was mortified afterwards and rushed out like I'd never been there, lol.

I live in the city, with my neighbors really close to me, and neither my neighbors to the right nor the left of me ever close curtains. My cats sometimes open mine so they can see out, and then I can see right into their apartments and they can see (at least a sliver) into mine. It's annoying. I wish everyone would have and close curtains/blinds/whatever.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-02 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah I honestly don't get it. I close all of my blinds as soon as it starts getting dark because I don't want people creeping on me. I don't understand how you don't realize that the entire world can see you if you leave your lights on and your curtains/blinds open!

Exhibitionism/public sex is one of those things where I'm fine with it as a kink, but putting it into practice can run up against the fact that you may be involving people in your sex acts without their consent. No, seeing a couple of consenting adults having sex is not traumatic and it's nothing on the order of being touched without consent (and I was an apartment dweller long enough to know that it's really hard to completely shield everyone around you from the fact that you're having sex because even if you're super quiet there may still be bed rattling or other signs) but still. If you're doing it on purpose because you get off on it, that means you are using other people to get off (as opposed to fantasizing about them without ever letting on) and they will realize you are using them to get off without them being asked or given the opportunity to participate on their own terms and have their own needs addressed.
