[Criminal Minds season 4, episode 13, "Bloodline"]

For me personally, I can't get past how wildly, wildly problematic it is.

Same. The list of CM episodes I hate is very short, but this one is pretty much at the top of that list.

Wait, kidnapping who? Just random, non-Roma girls?

That's just ... wha???????

(Anonymous) 2019-02-02 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, kidnapping random non-Roma girls to be brides for their sons

So, what did they do to find husbands for their daughters?

(Anonymous) 2019-02-02 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
You know, I don't remember if they address that

Might as well go rewatch the episode and see

(Anonymous) 2019-02-02 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think they kept them. They only show us the boys in that episode, the agents are only talking about countless abducted little girls, and towards the end, the mother is warning the boy not to talk about his "brothers".

Figured as much. The villains in this kind of story are basically goblins, all-male figures victimizing pure and helpless women. This is why people who were arguing over that refugee caravan made such a big deal over how many people in it were or weren’t adult men.

It’s easier to recruit husbands into a culty thing, especially one that patriarchal, than wives. At least that’s how it was in the one I grew up in.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-02 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
In this specific example, it's a ethnic thing more than a cult.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-02 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
But they’re very much living in their own cultural headspace and exist as others inside society, recruitment would mean changing newcomers similarly

(Anonymous) 2019-02-03 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
You could bring recruits into the heads pace but you can't make them members of your ethnic group

Obviously this is assuming that ethnic identity is patrilineal in this instance

(Anonymous) 2019-02-03 02:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Kidnapping girls doesn’t make them your ethnicity either??

(Anonymous) 2019-02-02 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
To be clear I mean them existing as a conspiracy kidnapping girls, that’s the “culty” mindset

(Anonymous) 2019-02-02 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
A bit off topic, but: I don't watch Criminal Minds as a matter of habit, but I have caught episodes here and there over the years. So it's funny to me that the few episodes I've seen seem to be the ones fans discuss the most!

It was too horrifying to me. Not to mention the overall concept being grossly bigoted and just - yuck, but - little girls kidnapped and brainwashed to the point of helping kidnap other girls? Men and boys thinking that utterly fucking over another family and holding some wee girl against her will for all her life/until she breaks and gives in and 'loves' them?

So revolting a concept, I hated that ep and will *never* rewatch it. Just - good gods no.

I'm not disagreeing, it's definitely revolting, but I think that part of it is pretty comfortably within CM's wheelhouse as a show.

Oh, it does. And a lot of CMs episodes were very off-putting for a lot of reasons. I haven't watched in quite a few years, it just became too gross and overwhelming.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-02 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Totally. It's definitely shock-exploitation type of stuff and it's one of the worst parts of the show IMO.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-03 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
Pretty much agreed on this. I love season four in general, it's one of my favorite seasons, but this is one of the weaker episodes in that season for me.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-02 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
And they knew it was dodgy because they threw in one line about how they're not REALLY Roma, they're some weird cult offshoot, but seriously, guys, just make it a weird cult and leave out all the Roma stuff! Roma people have major purity taboos which means they would never, ever marry their kids to outsiders.

Wow, that's disgustingly racist.
