In canons where certain things have stayed secret for literally hundreds (or thousands) of years (existence of werewolves, vampires, magic, etc.) and the story (canon or fic) has people who presumably want to keep these things secret acting like complete and total weirdos in public (not just acceptably eccentric), especially in small towns.

Yes! Same with superhero movies/shows, honestly. I like them. But I just can't buy that everyone hadn't already figured it out because superheroes act really weird out of costume in ways that should make them prime suspects for being either a hero or a serial killer.
