Fiction pet Peeves

What are little things that bug you in fiction, whether that is canon or fanfics.

One thing is "gods" used as a mild swear in worlds that have multiple gods. Like, using god as a swear word came about in English for specific reasons in specific contexts. There is no reason to assume that they would have the same swear word in a world where multiple gods are worshiped.

TIL.

Also, now I'm wondering what the swears were like back when multiple gods and goddesses WERE worshipped. Did you say, "Oh Hera!" or "Oh Anubis!"?

Honestly, I'm not sure there would have been swears related to religion. I expect that back then they were pretty much exclusively related to sex and/or bodily functions.

NAYRT—someone must’ve written a book/their doctoral thesis on profanity/oaths in the ancient world, right? Gonna check when I go to work tomorrow.

yes, I can think of at least 3 papers I've skimmed about ancient greek oaths, but damned if i can find the links to them now.

AYRT—I work in a public library that has a subscription to JSTOR, so I know what I’ll be doing if I have any downtime tomorrow.

In canons where certain things have stayed secret for literally hundreds (or thousands) of years (existence of werewolves, vampires, magic, etc.) and the story (canon or fic) has people who presumably want to keep these things secret acting like complete and total weirdos in public (not just acceptably eccentric), especially in small towns.

Yes! Same with superhero movies/shows, honestly. I like them. But I just can't buy that everyone hadn't already figured it out because superheroes act really weird out of costume in ways that should make them prime suspects for being either a hero or a serial killer.

What? I always play crazy superhuman baseball with my perfectly normal human friends at light speed.

Making everything work out great for the main character even though that actually means life sucks for a lot of other people. (But they're not important because they're not the main character.)

Yes! Also, remember that even when your main character is superpowered, they still need other people. And they still aren't going to be able to do everything and solve everything and have a perfect life. If they do, it is boring.

When we're constantly told by the narrative and other characters how OMG AMAZING the main character is and how OMG AMAZING and peerless they are at something, but in practice, they're actually terrible at it and everyone just shrugs off their constant fuck ups, even if it means everyone else is dying because of them.

That's basically a Mary Sue tbh

Well yeah. But I just read part of a lengthy work of original published fiction that revolves around two Mary Sues. And the thing is, they're in original published fiction and they're both male, so the fandom eats this shit up with a spoon.

My first thought for this is admittedly not a main character, but I just watched Skyfall and this is totally Q. Super tech genius. Gets potentially hostile laptop from known cyberterrorist. Immediately plugs it into his own main system. Which controls the terrorist's prison cell. Yes, absolutely a tech genius.
