When we're constantly told by the narrative and other characters how OMG AMAZING the main character is and how OMG AMAZING and peerless they are at something, but in practice, they're actually terrible at it and everyone just shrugs off their constant fuck ups, even if it means everyone else is dying because of them.

Well yeah. But I just read part of a lengthy work of original published fiction that revolves around two Mary Sues. And the thing is, they're in original published fiction and they're both male, so the fandom eats this shit up with a spoon.

My first thought for this is admittedly not a main character, but I just watched Skyfall and this is totally Q. Super tech genius. Gets potentially hostile laptop from known cyberterrorist. Immediately plugs it into his own main system. Which controls the terrorist's prison cell. Yes, absolutely a tech genius.
