They used to. The name before or after the / showed you who is topping. Now we have tags instead.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-05 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
Tags are searchable, which is nice.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-05 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
The tags are useless for that, though! Every arrangement of the pairing falls under one tag, like everything is labeled "Relationship: A/B" no matter whether A or B is topping.

There's an occasional person that puts "top!A" or "bottom!B" or whatnot in the tags, but they're few and far between, and it's not one of the more regulated styles of tags in the first place.

That was the norm in the Digimon fandom way back when, and it had some less than charming consequences for characterisation in fic.

That said, I guess that's kind of the point. Finding NO. 6 fic where Shion tops is a rare treat indeed.

Oh hey No. 6 fan, if you have any good recs, please share ?

Check in tomorrow, and I'll try to get a list together ♥

No 6~. I am not finished watching (only mid way through episode 7), but I love that their relationship is organic and there's actually a story going on as well. Also when it was recced to me as shounen-ai, I'm not going to lie that I assumed it was basically gonna be all subtext (or too-tight shipping goggles), but they actually kissed this episode!

It's always good to hear that new people are discovering it ♥

Yeah, this is what I'd think would happen if other fandoms decided to make this sort of who-tops-who hardcoded into the naming convention. I'm pretty glad seme/uke dynamics aren't considered the default anymore, and that there are more choices than before, but I also hope that somehow people who want to know which character tops in a fic are able to find that out easily without having to manually dig through a fic.

This made me smile because the old Digimon Adventure/Digimon 02 fandom was my first thought too. There was... quite a bit of difference between Daiken and Kaisuke back in the day.

Tell me about it. There was the difference between Daiken and Kensuke, even.

Ah, hey, this was my comment! Thanks for making a secret out of it! :D

I am into a brand new pairing now and I AM STILL HAVING THIS PROBLEM

(Anonymous) 2019-02-05 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
get thee behind me satan, fics have switching and oral and frot and stuff in them now and I for one am grateful

(Anonymous) 2019-02-05 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
There's nothing wrong with that! Just sometimes I have a particular itch, and it would be nice if it was easier to scratch it. No harm no foul.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-05 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
Dude they always had oral and frot. I get switching is more common now but it wasn't nonexistent before, either?

(Anonymous) 2019-02-05 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
It’s funny how defensive the switching fans get whenever someone breathes anything about the top/bottom order in shipnames. Chill, guys, like it’s just a wish? No one’s forcing anyone to write shipsnames the way they want to. English speaking fandom got used to writing shipnames in alphabetical order and mostly not bothering to tag or mention who tops or bottoms or even if there’s switching, there’s no way people are going to change how they write shipnames anytime soon.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-05 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
not sure how you can actually take someone saying "get thee behind me satan" seriously in context

(Anonymous) 2019-02-05 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
I must be way out of the loop because I thought we do do that. At least when I was in my big slash fandoms, we DEFINITELY did the "Top/Bottom" or "TopxBottom" or even the name smash with first name as top. I'm shocked that this still isn't the case.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-05 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
At least in all the fandoms I've been part of in the last few years, it's just been one namesmash that everything fell under-- even the "/" and "x" fell completely out of vogue.

The last time this came up, someone suggested "|" as a switching symbol, which I really like and I wish we could employ-- so like A/B would mean A topping, where A|B would mean they switch during the course of the story. I think that'd be awesome. But it seems like we're just stuck with the singular namesmash for now.

Isn't that what the tags "Top Charactername" and "Bottom Charactername" are for?

Personally I never gave a fuck about who topped and who bottomed, so that ship name trend only meant I had to run at least two searches to get all the content from the ship I wanted.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-05 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
I like this in theory but it's difficult to make work in practice because how do you tag non-smut fic? Plus fandom likes to pick one tag as a default, meaning if you like the 'wrong' order of preference if you were tag with just that tag no one's going to see it. For example I had someone leave me a nasty comment on a fic once because I tagged it AB but the fic was actually BA and they complained I was 'misleading' them...but AB is the main widely accepted ship name and the order that the AO3 tag is in, if I'd tagged it BA it would have shown up in only a very narrow search and I dislike the idea that people who prefer the less-popular order should be somehow ghettoized into a little-used tag. I suppose a good way to split the middle might be namesmush pairing but A/B tag to designate order, but even then that doesn't work on AO3.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-05 04:50 am (UTC)(link)
I'm actually relieved fandom's largely moved away from the "order of names indicates who tops" thing, because to me having to pick one or the other was mostly just stressful, especially when it came to ships where I didn't really care to think about their sex lives at all. Different strokes, I guess.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-07 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
newer fans are moving away from a lot of the ways older fans labeled things. Sometimes for the good. Sometimes not. For instance 'squick' needs to make a come back and quick.

But I'll never forget the look on a group of con goers faces when I said 'Sharkon' was the proper way to say the pairing name because it meant that Shiro would be topping Zarkon.
