They used to. The name before or after the / showed you who is topping. Now we have tags instead.

Tags are searchable, which is nice.

The tags are useless for that, though! Every arrangement of the pairing falls under one tag, like everything is labeled "Relationship: A/B" no matter whether A or B is topping.

There's an occasional person that puts "top!A" or "bottom!B" or whatnot in the tags, but they're few and far between, and it's not one of the more regulated styles of tags in the first place.

But it does exist.

I don't know why, if you have a preference, you wouldn't just search Top!A or Top!B rather than the pairing tag as a whole.

OK. Say that 50% of the fandom, A tops, and 50% of the fandom, B tops. 10% of fics in the fandom use the A tag and 10% use the tag for B. In that scenario, searching for the tag Top!A will return only 20% of the total Top!A fic in existence. You're missing the vast majority of the fic.

I really wish more people would tag for top and bottom!

Tagging bottom!Sam or bottom!Dean is a pretty widely accepted practice in the Supernatural fandom, mostly because if you don't you'll end up with screechy comments about how the "wrong" brother is taking up the butt. So I tend to do it out of habit in the (rare) non-SPN slash I write.

Adding that one to the endlessly amusing list of things SPN fandom will screech about.
