Taking things too seriously, regardless of how silly or child-oriented they are, is a general fandom issue and not specific to Doctor Who. I think part of it is that if you first experienced something as a kid, you tend to ignore how silly it can be. Another issue is that when you get emotionally invested in something and/or get a lot of knowledge in your head about something, it feels like that thing must really, really matter, and that leads to taking it over-seriously. Finally, people get really caught up in fannish debates and arguments, shipping, etc.

Being ridiculous is part of the charm of Doctor Who.
