For me personally as a Doctor Who fan, the fact that it's so doofy and ridiculous is a huge part of what makes it great. Partly because I just like doofy things.

But also partly because, like. I think the fact that the show is clearly not good and is clearly doofy really frees it up to do a lot of things it wouldn't otherwise be able to do. The great secret of Doctor Who is that juts because you're doofy doesn't mean you can't also be serious. The show can tell really weird stories and combine really incongruous elements, and it works in part because it's so obviously doofy from the start. You couldn't do as many things that are obviously absurd if you were trying to take yourself entirely seriously and fit into the standard mold of what serious storytelling is supposed to look like. It's this brilliant trick that somebody came up with and it's what makes the show great.

I do honestly wonder if people forget that it's basically a kids' show. It's "evolved" a little bit, but... not really a lot? It's always been bite-sized, easy-to-follow goofy stuff, interspersed with the occasional balls-to-the-walls srs bzns.

So it's not like I can really say it's not a children's show, because it was a children's show, and because it would seem overly defensive.

At the same time, even in classic Who, the percentage of material that's really childrens-show-y varies a lot, and in new Who, it's probably only like 20% in the Moffat seasons and even lower after that. I don't think "bite-sized easy to follow goofy stuff" is an accurate summary of what's going on under the hood. And I definitely don't think anyone has ever called EG Ghost Light easy to follow.

What you call doofy, another person might just call fun. For some people that's the main attraction! It has a charm all its own, and that's what gets some of us so invested. You can't start to take it seriously until you've enjoyed the ridiculous parts and gotten sucked in.

This. It is silly in a good way. It is just full of joy, even at its absolute darkest. I love Who's silliness. That is part of the appeal.

Doctor Who baffles me in a lot of the same ways that other people are baffled when I try to explain Kingdom Hearts to them.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-05 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, I think that's a very apt comparison.

It sounds like it should be really interesting and fun, but the gameplay's mediocre at best and the story is surprisingly boring?

(Anonymous) 2019-02-05 04:12 am (UTC)(link)
It's doofy and fun and that's great!

But I have to ask - do you even fandom? I mean, how many doofy ridiculous shows (like Steven Universe or Supernatural) have the most intense fandoms?

I wanted to love Doctor Who so much but the constant darleks and cybermen just annoyed me too much. Plus they have the ability to go anywhere, anytime but 90% of the time end up on earth.

Taking things too seriously, regardless of how silly or child-oriented they are, is a general fandom issue and not specific to Doctor Who. I think part of it is that if you first experienced something as a kid, you tend to ignore how silly it can be. Another issue is that when you get emotionally invested in something and/or get a lot of knowledge in your head about something, it feels like that thing must really, really matter, and that leads to taking it over-seriously. Finally, people get really caught up in fannish debates and arguments, shipping, etc.

Being ridiculous is part of the charm of Doctor Who.
