I'm willing to bet ten years later most of those authors will look back on their fic and be harder on themselves about it than anyone else anyway, tbh.

"omg I wrote Hux/me in 2019 wtf teenage self aaaaa"

(Anonymous) 2019-02-07 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Not that this means they deserve outright mocking, because they don't. I'm just saying they probably will do it on their own later, so everyone else can chill lol

(Anonymous) 2019-02-07 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
Not everyone is a judgmental asshole incapable of letting other people have fun.

LOL, exactly. I look back on some of my early fanfic with embarrassment and I didn't even write self insert fic.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-07 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
The older I get, the less I care what people write in their fic. They’re having fun, so who am I to rain on their parade?

(Anonymous) 2019-02-07 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
I agree, they used to be annoying I’m not even sure why, I scroll past other pairings I don’t like with abandon. (Until I run out of other things to read).

At least you know threy enjoy what they are writing about hahahah.

I love that reader insert often have the dude being awesome at giving head. Might just be the fic I read though. Just saying when I revisited wrestling fiction at styles because a walking daddy kink who loves to go down. Thanks character / reader writers!

They're not my thing but I've never cared that people write them, have fun with it and all.

I agree, OP. I don't get these fics at all. But I've stopped caring that other people like them. People should get to enjoy what they enjoy and write what they want to write.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-07 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
and here I am on the other end, having been in smaller fandoms where most of the fic was like this and one could only hope for a new fic in literally any other style or genre in their favorite pairing once every six months or so. combing through the stuff I don't like became so tedious that I stopped reading fic altogether.

like, yeah, you're right, to each their own, but fandom in general tends to suffer from herd mentality so once the fandom output becomes almost wholly of one kind because everyone's basically "well X, Y, and Z write this so I'll write it too and then I'll be popular too!" ...well, it ain't fun for those of us who don't find that kind of fic fun.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-07 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
I would be significantly less annoyed with them if there are more m/m character/reader fic honestly... because I would definitely read those, lol

(Anonymous) 2019-02-07 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
Seriously, why were these ever looked down on in the first place? They seem harmless and aren't they pretty much in the same ballpark as choose your own advenure stories?

(Anonymous) 2019-02-07 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
Because "cringe" and "I don't like those so they shouldnt exist".

Young teens write them, so when slightly older teens see them, they overreact in horror to show how grown-up they are.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-07 04:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Because they're Mary Sue fics but the Mary Sue is the reader and not the writer?

I really dislike these fics, but I'd never shit on anybody publicly or negatively comment on someone's story. they should write what they want.

I do wish it was slightly easier to exclude in my searches.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-07 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
Otherwise I don't care.

It's easy enough to exclude it for, say, Character_A/Reader, but then you there's Character_A/You, Character_A/OC, Character_A/OFC and then there may be Character_B/Reader, Character_B/You, Character_B/OC, Character_B/OFC, and sometimes even some for Character_C or Character_D.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-07 03:33 am (UTC)(link)
This. People can write what they want but I don't want that garbage cluttering up my searches.

Re: I do wish it was slightly easier to exclude in my searches.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-07 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Not only that, but the /OFC isn't always the self insert type and it's hard to distinguish for searching

I don't seek them out or enjoy reading them either, but people can write what they like. I'm guilty of writing a smutty self-insert one-shot when I was 17/18. It never made it to my laptop, let alone being posted. It lives at the bottom of my drawer, written in barely-visible pencil because I was so paranoid about someone finding it and reading it. It's pure wish-fulfillment and I actually commend anyone brave enough to post theirs, because I'd never have the guts to.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-07 05:17 am (UTC)(link)
I prefer reader fic far more than people hollowing a character I actually like out to be OOC to turn them into a self-insert. That stuff is disingenuous and annoying. By all means just make readerfic if you want readerfic.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-07 05:40 am (UTC)(link)
Same. If I'm looking for a story involving character X, I want a story about them, not a reader-insert that happens to share their name and appearance.

They're not my thing but as I get older I'm more of the view, let people have their fantasies and if there's an audience (clearly there is) then who cares. I've also started supporting reader inserts a lot more despite not reading them because I'm sick of seeing stuff like "lol stupid fangirls think Character A is X in bed when really he's Y" like I said...let people have their fantasies?

But I agree with the post above that sometimes it's hard to avoid them in searches due to tagging issues but eh I can usually tell I wont want to read something from the summary. And yeah also the issue with people scooping out a can on character and putting themselves in their skin suit.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-07 10:25 am (UTC)(link)
Sometimes I see older fans waxing nostalgic about the good times when people weren't vicious antis and I'm just like, yo...... I too am a fandom old and I haven't forgotten when y'all thought sporking/MSTing people's self insert fic was an acceptable way to spend one's time. I hate today's vicious antis too but fandom in the early 2000s was ALSO incredibly cruel and filled with petty drama, sockpuppets, anon hate, bullying, ship wars, character bashing, etc. Whenever people are like, "It's so important for young'ns these days to remember their fandom history! Then they'd understand the concept of [YKINMKATO, squick, whatever] and leave each other alone" I'm also like, yes and it's important to know the part of fandom history when we thought eviscerating people's fic was a fun activity, and pledge never to do that again.

Am I the only one that actually likes reader fic? I wish there was more of it in my fandom. I don’t care for the “I” ones but “you” can be pretty hot, especially if it’s a character you’re crushing on.

I still think all of the x Reader fic and self-insert stuff is trash. I wish people would write more fic of the canon characters rather than x Reader fic.
