Can you expand on what you mean with this whole Internet killing people thing?

WE DID IT REDDIT!

Bostom Marathon Bombing happens.

1. Reddit believes a man who went missing is the bomber and, as a result, begins to harass that man's family.
2. To prevent the harassment, the police (or was it FBI?) was forced to come out and say they already know who's responsible.
3. Learning that the police/FBI are now onto them, the bombers ran.
4. While on the run, they murdered a policeman, kidnapped another man, and got into a shootout with police, which led to the injury of two officers, one of whom would later die from his wounds.
5.While trying to escape the shootout, one of the bombers, who is presumed to be the mastermind behind the bombing, was accidentally run over and killed, potentially removing key info that the police/FBI could've used.

It is very possible that, had Reddit never interrupted the investigation, the police/FBI could've nabbed the bombers without anyone being injured or killed.

In the end, the missing man that Reddit initially believed to be the bomber was found — he had committed suicide weeks before the bombing even occurred.

Uhhhhh I agree that Reddit sucks but I think blaming the bombers' violence on Reddit is very, very, very, very suspect. It was the Tsaernevs who murdered and shot those people, not anyone on Reddit.

And I also don't support harassing anyone. But I don't think that talking about serious allegations is the same as making up conspiracy theories. And I think to draw the line from your example, and say that no one should publicize people doing shitty things on the Internet because they're going to get people killed, is....... very dumb.

What I shared was literally internet mob justice causing someone's death.

How would you feel if a group of people started harassing and making up lies about you? If every time a potential employer google searched your name, the first things that came up were, "So and So is racist! So and so is a rapist! So and so hates __________." Then you lost a job opportunity.

That is what internet mob justice does. It ruins lives.

OK, but on the other hand, I think it's useful, important, valuable, and justified to talk about those allegations when they are true, or when they are supported by reasonable evidence. And calling it "mob justice" seems like it's really overstating the case.

So you are fine with people like Alex Jones saying that the Sandy Hook parents are crisis actors?

I don't think that those are true, or supported by reasonable evidence.

So, no.

You don't think...

Proved the anon you were replying to's point there. People are arrogant shitheads who think that their opinion counts as the long arm of the law.

No, murdering assholes who had already murdered people caused those deaths. You can shriek and wail about it being actually Reddit's fault all you want, but when you're talking about people who set off a bomb in a crowd of other humans, assuming they weren't going to try to murder their way out when they were caught no matter what is pretty naive.

And discussing the potential sexual misconduct of a D-list celebrity who's been infamous on the con circuit for years is one hell of a different beast than playing amateur sleuth over actual violent criminals anyway. You're comparing apples and ball bearings.

On point 2. Then it's the authorities that fucked up if it went how you say (not my country I don't know much about the case). It is definitely not the first time a false lead has been picked up by the public. They have a responsibility to protect the family from threats, but they weren't obligated to share any information on the case with the public.
