What are you supposed to do when your brain starts yelling at you about how you suck

(Anonymous) 2019-02-11 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
Yell back that it's full of shit.

sing everytime we touch by cascada aloud, preferably in the weirdest voice imaginable

DA
Do you think that if they held their nose, it would help?

I named that little shitty naggy voice, I call it either Jessica or Sharon. So when it starts telling me I suck I say, oh fuck off, Jessica, you're not even a person.

Interrupt it as best as you can before you end up in a shame spiral. I'm serious - this happens, but you don't have to listen. Sing songs, recite poetry, do something (that's not destructive) that doesn't involve sitting there and listening to a big ol' lecture from your jerkbrain.

The most effective countermeasure for me is to do something nice for someone else. Consider volunteering, perhaps, or baking someone cookies just because.

Treat it like it's some nosy busybody aunt you don't like.

"I'm sorry you feel that way, Karen, but you're an idiot."

Cry.
I usually feel better after that.

Get high. Usually works for me.

Ignore brain.

Put on music that cheers you up and sing / dance along. It is a good distraction and can lift your mood.

Sometimes it helps to sit down and write out how you're feeling, and a what is actually reasonable. (Aka I feel like I'm useless/lazy, but realistically, I'm just getting over a cold, had a very stressful week, etc., and I'm doing the best I can.) And reminding yourself that it'll be good enough

I read advice about looking in the mirror and telling yourself I love you. Or picking one body part and saying a loving rather than hateful thing about it, until you can start teaching yourself to be compassionate and caring towards yourself. I'm trying that one.
