Re: What's the difference between preachy and nuaced for you?

I watch a lot of procedural cop/medical type shows and pretty much anytime an episode involves any sort of marginalized group there are tons of people complaining that it's preachy, but to me, it usually comes across as just...depicting reality.

I've seen people complain when shows like "Criminal Minds" or "NCIS" have episodes that touch on political issues, and that criticism's always amused me because...the BAU and NCIS are organizations within the federal government. Politics is kind of going to be part of their job at some point as a result. Some of the criminals they deal with commit politically-motivated crimes, so how are they not supposed to address that when it happens?

I've found most of the time something is criticized as being "too political" what they almost always mean is "political in a way I don't agree with". Even shows whose main plot is kind of inherently political will get people complaining about how it's "too political" and it's like...that's what the damn show is about, what did you expect?

Fully agreed on all of this.

I actually think Criminal Minds is an interesting example here - there was one season where it felt like they suddenly decided to start doing positive gay stories, and they were just so, like, intentional with it. It felt like they had decided they needed to make up for some previous iffy gay stories or something. And it was definitely a good change overall! But it always made me laugh a little.

I'm super late to this, but yeah, exactly. Shows like that that are about crimes have to address those things. Especially if they're set in modern times. More and more crimes are politically motivated these days, and even aside from crime...LIFE is political. It's hard to avoid.
