OP here...

Just to be clear, I like this season and the new Doctor very much! I'm not a regular viewer and while I liked all the new Doctors so far, there were series I just kind of opted out of because I didn't care for the writing or the story arcs. But I still feel like sometimes the show's writing doesn't trust me (or its audience in general) to pick up on its message without making it really, really obvious and that bugs me a little.

I suspect it's what someone said above: original DW was intended as a children's show that adults could enjoy if they chose, and Thirteen's episodes so far seem very much like a return to old-style Who. (A number of parallels to Two and Five's era especially.)

But, at least for me, one of the primary reasons classic Who was good when it was good was because of the complexity and quality of the writing. Being retro doesn't and shouldn't mean being simplistic.

I think I've come to agree with the Verity assessment, that most of the 13 episodes we've seen thus far have been stepping too carefully and not taking many risks, story wise. We'll see where they go from here, eh?
