I think that the messaging has been heavy-handed at times, yeah, but I think it's a general problem with the writing of the season being heavy-handed and not great overall, more than a problem specifically with messages

I've seen a lot of people say this, and I just don't personally agree. I feel like Who has always had messages, and I don't feel it is doing so any more now than it ever has.

I agree. I was rewatching Invasion of the Dinosaurs lately, and it had so much more environmentalism than I remembered. The Doctor even says he agrees with the villains' main grievance that humans are wrecking their own planet. So political, so messagey!

Definitely. NuWho has been a little more heavy-handed than Classic Who, but there's no particular difference in this season.

I feel like any time someone complains about messagey Who, it's obvious they've never watched any 70's Who, which was chock full of messages.

Speaking as an outsider here, I thought DW fans were generally into the preaching?

(Anonymous) 2019-02-12 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
I think percent of the season-wise, we did get more preachy episodes than average. I felt like I was supposed to agree with the message and not notice plot issues/plot weakness, but I suppose it might settle down and mesh better next series.

It does get a bit heavy-handed, it's true. Still has lots of moments that make me really happy, mind.

I did feel some moments were more heavy-handed than usual (or maybe I'm just noticing them more), but I still like the new series.

I'm all for the messages; I like message-driven work. Most of DW is full of social and political messages.

The problem I had was when they stopped the plot to have the Doctor explain the message. If you're going to make an episode about Rosa Parks being pursued by a racist dude from the future, that's inherently making a political statement; you don't need to end with a lecture For the Children about the impact she had.

It's a writing problem—attempting to make it children's TV (as opposed to family TV) and underestimating children's level of sophistication/the fact that children are watching it with adults who can explain anything they don't get—not a problem of the politics themselves.

I like the way you explained this, but mostly I just loooove your icon. :D

Thanks! Yours too.

There was a lot I enjoyed about the season. I just think that Thirteen deserves tighter scripts.

OP

I was really apprehensive about that episode but it was better than I anticipated. But I still agree, it was a little heavy handed and tried to drive the point home with a sledgehammer when it really wasn't necessary, IMO.

OP here...

Just to be clear, I like this season and the new Doctor very much! I'm not a regular viewer and while I liked all the new Doctors so far, there were series I just kind of opted out of because I didn't care for the writing or the story arcs. But I still feel like sometimes the show's writing doesn't trust me (or its audience in general) to pick up on its message without making it really, really obvious and that bugs me a little.

I suspect it's what someone said above: original DW was intended as a children's show that adults could enjoy if they chose, and Thirteen's episodes so far seem very much like a return to old-style Who. (A number of parallels to Two and Five's era especially.)

But, at least for me, one of the primary reasons classic Who was good when it was good was because of the complexity and quality of the writing. Being retro doesn't and shouldn't mean being simplistic.

I think I've come to agree with the Verity assessment, that most of the 13 episodes we've seen thus far have been stepping too carefully and not taking many risks, story wise. We'll see where they go from here, eh?
