Tastes linked to memories

(Anonymous) 2019-02-12 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I just ate a candy that was my favorite in high school that I don’t eat much anymore and woo boy it was like having a flashback.

So anyway, what tastes are really linked to certain memories or periods of time in your life? Are there foods you avoid because of memories attached? Foods you seek out?

Campbell's cream of mushroom soup reminds me of my childhood because my mother would make it for me and I'd pick out all the mushrooms!

Surge reminds me of high school so hard. It was like the only thing we drank. I loved it and then they stopped making it. (They have a new one now but it's not the same taste so I'm forever in mourning).

For a good number of years, for Easter I'd get a new Calvin & Hobbes book and a bag of sour gummy worms. Second I have sour gummy worms I'm there on the old floral armchair with Attack of the Deranged Mutant Killer Monster Snowgoons.

Childhood and bubblegum ice cream or snow cones. Reminds me of being a kid and running around my grandmas house with my cousins and sister. And then we heard the ice cream man coming down the street. Either the truck song or the little honk thing.

Still calms me down to this day.

club mate is the taste of game development for me, because it's what i binged while i was studying/working on our semester project

i never got a job and instead just fell into depression so i avoided it for a long time, but now occasionally i manage to drink it without feeling too sad

there's a type of ice cream bar I used to eat a lot of in high school that gave me one of the few good memories of that part of my life

Almond praline ice-cream. My grandmother made it for Christmas one year, and somehow the taste just imprinted on my memory.

And one that's maybe more a scent memory - hot chips with vinegar. When I was little and my parents would take me and my brother to the neighbourhood pool, after our swim we could have an icecream or chips. The icecream was almost always a Hava Heart, and the chips were *always* with salt and vinegar. And then we'd walk back to the car, barefoot, having to pick between walking over hot gravel or grass full of bindies.
Ahhh, childhood.

There's that orange drink that would show up at things like Girl Scout events or after-hours school functions. I think it was something that could be ordered from McDonald's because it came in McDonald's-branded beverage coolers. I never particularly liked it, but it was a routine thing in my childhood.

"Fanon" that surprised you by turning out to actually be canon

[personal profile] ibbity 2019-02-13 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
Anyone ever have the experience of getting slightly into a fandom, seeing what you assume is just random fanon all over the place, and then upon getting deeper into the media discovering that it's genuinely supported by canon?

Putting mine here so as not to be a big wall o' text in the "head" comment.

I like Les Miserables. I haven't seen the show, or any of the screen adaptations, but I like the songs (I listen to both the original London cast recording and the original Broadway cast recording.) I liked the story behind the songs. Recently decided to see what the fandom was like, and discovered that everyone and their dog was quite convinced that Grantaire was extremely gay for Enjolras and possibly vice versa. I was like "lol shippers gonna ship" and didn't think anything of it.
Then I decided to go back and read the book again; had been a while and I didn't remember most of the details because it's approximately 100,000,000,000 pages long.

I'm in the habit of reading older books, and have a passing familiarity with the classics (as in, Greek/Roman philosophy, mythology etc) both because I'm a historian and because you kinda have to to get a lot of allusions/references in older books. So I'm quite conversant with 19th century literary conventions, including how they tended to handle sexuality. And yeah, there is HELLA subtext in Hugo's depiction of Enjolras and Grantaire. By the standards of the day, it's...not subtle. It's not a huge plot point, but it's kinda difficult to ignore, especially if you understand all the classical allusions (if the nod to Plato's Phaedrus was intentional, it's a very blatant one.) So I apologize to the Les Mis fandom for assuming that they were creating this ship out of thin air, but in my defense, this is to my knowledge the only time I've ever been wrong about "shippers gonna ship" versus "the slashiness is legitimately canon."

Not in the fandom, but this was my reaction to hearing the vampires sparkled in Twilight. I thought people were exaggerating, but nope. I still get a laugh out of it when I remember.

basically the entire range of classic pc games, especially stuff like doom, fallout, half-life or system shock. the first time i bought a gaming pc was when i was like 10 years ago, before that i always had a (used) mac, so i missed out on basically everything.

a lot of the times it feels like i'm missing some foundation to understand where particular games or mechanics are coming from.

I kinda wish I was there for the first version of Final Fantasy XIV, but I didn't have a PC that could run it. It would've been worth the price of admission to experience the end of the world.

Stand by Me. A lot of epilogues end with everyone getting their dream job, staying friends, and a perfect family, but Stand by Me is one of the few I can see actually happening. Might not be the best, but it's stuck with me.

They Live - the hero blows up the big alien mind-control ray and then immediately gets shot by a bunch of alien security guards. As he lays there dying in the wreckage of the explosion, he raises his hand and flips the aliens the bird. Beautiful.

The Talented Mr. Ripley (movie) ending is perfect to me. It is the ultimate tragic, chilling, and perfectly appropriate ending. "Tell me some good things about Tom Ripley." *shudders*

Literally one second before the screen cut to black on It Follows, I couldn't take it anymore and I cried at the screen, "Look BEHIND you!" And then the screen cut to black, almost before I'd finished speaking, and I just sat there thinking, "Jesus christ, this movie had me EXACTLY where it wanted me."

I love the ending to Last Night (a little indie apocalypse movie). It was an incredibly heartbreaking movie, but the ending took the entire thing and pulled it ever so slightly away from nihilism and towards a sense of meaning and beauty.
