I don't want to be rude, and I agree that fictional politics are fascinating. But, uh, I don't think that the prequels did a very good or in-depth version of fictional politics at all. It's pretty much as basic and on-the-nose and simple a version of that story as you can do.

Agreed

(Anonymous) 2019-02-12 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Yup. And all while being filmed with all the cinematic wonder of three hours of C-SPAN.

I agree. I appreciated the glimpse we got, but it was very superficial and perfunctory. I wouldn't expect more from this franchise.

I mean, you're not wrong, but I think op was more talking about the people who complain that there were actual politics in it that got gone into more in depth than "here is the empire, it's evil, that's p. much it." I have seen some people complain about that, "it's so boring" etc.

I can easily see why someone would consider the scenes boring even as someone who loves having politics

& I'm not sure how much more in-depth it is than "here's the empire, it's evil"

As far as I remember, it was like:

Step 1: vote of no confidence

Step 2: ...

Step 3: EMPIRE!

THIS.

It wasn't that the prequels delved into the building of the Empire, it was that they did such a piss-poor job. The timeframes alone were laughable.

LOL, this is how I remember it, too.

More like

Step 1: Republic was already corrupted and having problems, as seen in TMP
Step 2: corporations getting seats on the senate caused even more problems (Trade Federation, Commmerce Guild, etc.)
Step 3: Palpatine manipulates things to get himself elected chancellor
Step 4: Palpatine engineers Clone Wars, creating both sides, so he can stay in power and get more and more power.
Step 5: Palpatine sets things up to make the Jedi look weak and bad. Jedi don't help matters.
Step 6: Palpatine manipulates Anakin. And everyone else.
Step 7: Palpatine sets things up to make the Jedi look like traitors
Step 8: Jedi take the bait
Step 9: Palpatine uses the apparent Jedi betrayal to take the final steps of creating the Empire. Like in the early Roman Empire, the senate still exists and supposedly is a check on his power, but not really.
Step 10: Palpatine creates Death Star to seize that final bit of power. He disbands the Senate as he no longer needs them.

All of that was in the movies, not even drawing from any of the canon novels. Not saying everyone has to see it, but it is there at least for me.

The problem is, to me, steps 1 & 2 are basically things that happen in the background, and then nothing about steps 3-9 is very subtle at all

Steps 1 and 2 were covered very well in Clone Wars, though I admit it was subtle in the movies, it was there if you knew what you were looking at. It was just one of those blink and miss it things, I will admit.
