Same! It gave a better insight into the world.

Mind, I won't say the prequels did it very well, but that's what the clone wars show was for and some material like Leia, Princess of Alderaan and Lost Stars.

& I preordered Queen's Shadow yesterday and I can't wait.

I don't want to be rude, and I agree that fictional politics are fascinating. But, uh, I don't think that the prequels did a very good or in-depth version of fictional politics at all. It's pretty much as basic and on-the-nose and simple a version of that story as you can do.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-12 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed

(Anonymous) 2019-02-12 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Yup. And all while being filmed with all the cinematic wonder of three hours of C-SPAN.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-13 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
I agree. I appreciated the glimpse we got, but it was very superficial and perfunctory. I wouldn't expect more from this franchise.

I mean, you're not wrong, but I think op was more talking about the people who complain that there were actual politics in it that got gone into more in depth than "here is the empire, it's evil, that's p. much it." I have seen some people complain about that, "it's so boring" etc.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-13 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
I can easily see why someone would consider the scenes boring even as someone who loves having politics

& I'm not sure how much more in-depth it is than "here's the empire, it's evil"

(Anonymous) 2019-02-13 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
As far as I remember, it was like:

Step 1: vote of no confidence

Step 2: ...

Step 3: EMPIRE!

(Anonymous) 2019-02-13 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
THIS.

It wasn't that the prequels delved into the building of the Empire, it was that they did such a piss-poor job. The timeframes alone were laughable.

I like the prequel politics too. I just finished reading Darth Plagueus, and it added a lot to see how Palpatine did what he did and what the Jedi were really up against.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-13 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
Ooh, that sounds right up my alley. Thanks for the rec!

(Anonymous) 2019-02-13 06:56 am (UTC)(link)
See, the stuff about Darth Plageus is what I wanted to see. Not... pod racing.

I loved the Dune mini-series for the fictional politics too. I think people went into the prequel star wars movies expecting more war stuff and were surprised by the politics...which I thought was funny because normally wars are a result of political failures.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-13 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
The thing about political intrigue is that it's supposed to be intriguing. The politics in Star Wars weren't really. They could have done something new or interesting with the tired cliches they went with, but they didn't. And it took them a long time to not do it.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-13 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
I like the political stuff too, it rounds things out.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-13 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
The non-political stuff was also boring and poorly made.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-13 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
I don't agree, but I honestly do respect prequel fans a lot in the sense that the movies they describe are actually totally great. They're really spot-on in identifying what the movies were trying to do and how that would have added up into a great movie. Taking a really in-depth look at the politics of the late republic would be really interesting.

The problem I always have is that I just don't see the same stuff actually on the screen. But, you know, that's me.

+1 and well put.

This is kind of how I feel about Prequel haters. Like, I get it. I can see the plotlines of the movie and how the story works. But I think Lucas didn't make everything blindingly obvious. It requires you to pay attention to little tiny details in order to see the entire story (like, some of Palpatine's manipulations are only hinted at with a single line). They were enough for me, but I get that they weren't for a lot of people.

I just died laughing. I hope you're happy.

Okay? I mean, the basic story was very obvious. But there were subtle bits. Like single lines that made clear that Palpatine had been manipulating more people for longer than might be obvious. And exactly what Palpatine's plans were (see a comment I made above for what steps I think the movies gave us).

I feel like thus would have been more interesting to me that Anakin/Padme.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-13 04:44 am (UTC)(link)
No. They didn't have to show how the Republic turned into an Empire. This was not required.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-13 04:57 am (UTC)(link)
It's pretty intrinsic to the whole canon that the prequel stories are the story of the fall of the republic. If you're going to make a prequel it's going to have to deal with the fall of the Republic.
