Honestly Newt is just so adorable in general, I haven't seen the new movie but I loved him in the first FB, he was just so sweet and kind. Idk I'd just love to sit and talk with him about magical animals, or regular ones.

He's even better in the second one, and the scenes with his brother are especially sighworthy.

He's definitely just as adorable in the sequel, but his place/purpose in the story is a undefined mess.

Well yeah, the whole second movie is a hot mess, but that's beside the point.

i can't recommend the 2nd one. it tries to be so epic and newt has ZERO influence on the plot and it's a very frustrating experience. his sweet personality is what made him the hero of the first one! in the second one he could be replaced by a rubber ball.

sa- wow this is very ironic, i wrote my comment before i saw the one above lmao.

Seriously, fuck the second movie. This series would be so much better if it dropped this greater scope "war of the Wizards" nonsense and just focused on Newt's fun adventures. He's such a refreshing male main character and he deserves so much better than what Rowling did.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-13 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
or if the war of the wizards nonsense was just the backdrop while newt makes the world better in all the little ways that matter, by staying kind and empathising even with the grotesque and dangerous!

it felt like someone got insanely cold feet after the first one

Both were written by JKR, which is incredibly baffling since the second movie is so fucked in its priorities and undid all the set-up of the first one that you'd think a completely different writer came in. It sounds like Rowling had always planned for Newt to play less of a part...but in that case she shouldn't have fucking named the series "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" and set it up with Newt as the protagonist.

It's so frustrating. She gives us an adorable, sweet, very subversive protagonist and then proceeds to completely squander his story.

The truth is Newt is still cute and that's all that matters.
