You're not reading the right authors.

this!

Seconded

I won't argue that there are a lot of BDSM authors who write it badly. But to say that it's *all* awful and inaccurate goes way too far and is also wrong wrong wrong.

OP makes it sound like they think they're the only person who both practices BDSM in RL and also reads/writes fiction and therefore, they're the consummate judge of accuracy.

Newsflash: They're not.

Is it just me or is "played BDSM" a weird phrase

(Anonymous) 2019-02-13 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
It was a weird phrasing to me, but maybe it's a translation thing?

Also seconding the 'not reading the right fics', but then, I don't know OP's primary fandoms, so there might not be good stuff for the characters they care about.

As a kinkster and fic reader/writer, like... some people get it right for sure, but then, no one's experiences with kink are universal, so there's also a lot of room for 'well that's not how I feel about X'. (and, granted, like... in fic subspace is a lot easier to attain than in rl, because fantasy)

(Anonymous) 2019-02-14 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
I do think there's a ton of BDSM fic - maybe the majority - that just feels incredibly formulaic and lifeless, like someone just going through the motions, without really getting into any of the reasons why it's actually hot (to me). Just, like, having one character call the other "sir"... it just doesn't get there for me.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-14 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
I definitely don't want to argue with you on that one-- I don't read in any really big fandoms right now, so I haven't had to wade through much soulless bdsm fic.

I like to focus on the internal feelings, like... that's something I think people who think it's hot in fiction but who haven't done it might not have a grasp of, what goes through your head and your heart in scene.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-14 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
Yes! Exactly. I want to feel like the characters are real people and I want to get some sense of what they're feeling in the moment and a sense of physical immediacy and context.

I imagined they meant in more of a way that pthey roleplayed certain situations? I know nothing about bdsm though, so...

Don't a lot of people refer to partaking in kink as "playing" though?

(Anonymous) 2019-02-14 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
It ain't you my friend.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-13 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
LMAO THE BEST IMAGE CHOICE

excellently played anon, I love it

(Anonymous) 2019-02-14 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
I think a lot of it is written by people who don't have access to the scene and really, really wish it was a viable outlet for them.

That's my excuse, anyway.

Congrats on getting to experience this IRL.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-14 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
I assume(?) it's not intentional, but I was instantly given the image of those three ladies in some seriously kinky situations when reading this secret...

(Anonymous) 2019-02-14 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, but then lots of people who play don't know wtf they're doing either.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-14 02:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean, yeah. Having RL experience doesn't mean you're any good at what you do... or that you know how to translate that to the page.

"You can clearly tell this person has no experience" Yeah, well, that professional author who is married and has biological children also writes absolutely terrible sex scenes. And that person who just revealed they're an ace virgin blew me away with their sex scene.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-14 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
... and you can say with absolute certainty that it's 'they don't know what they're doing' and not 'they don't do it like I do it, so therefore they're wrong'?

(Anonymous) 2019-02-14 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
A lot of it is very definitely 'they don't know what they're doing'. Particularly when it comes to toys that just don't work the way the writers seem to think they do, or things that would cause serious harm if used the way they're written.

Which is fine, because it's id-tickling fiction, and not a primer on BDSM - its job is to entertain the reader, not to provide factual information, and no one should be getting kink tips from fanfic. But it can occasionally catapult you right out of the story when you come across something that really trips your 'that doesn't work that way' button, same as with any other subject a reader's familiar with and the author isn't.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-14 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
I feel this way about a lot of smut I read, not just BDSM. Like it's nice and all, but clearly not coming from a place of experience.

Nebezial, is that you?

This reminds me of that "straight girls don't know how to write anal" complaint post on Tumblr, as if no woman in the history of the species has ever taken it up the ass lmao
